Title: 1.4Tsi petrol VW engine?
Post by: Varche on 02 July 2017, 17:04:15
I have seen a 160 cv auto Golf estate for sale 2012.

Seems a lot of power from a 1.4 petrol. Anybody got any views or experience of them please ?

As it Seems VAG, everyone will be alone in a bit to tell you how sh!t they are ;).

To get my experiences in first, we have the 1.2tsi with a dsg box attached baby brother that produces about 120ps. It's punchy but the turbo lag can catch you out at junctions (just something to get used to). It returns 43mpg always over a tank, that's town and motorway. Probably because it's in a yeti that has the aerodynamics of a club sandwich!

So far, only had it 18months and 12k, but no bad experiences to report so far.

I would imagine the 1.4 will move you along at a decent lick even fully loaded.

Most of the modern small turbos produce good power specs on paper :).

Downsides, I find, are you have to keep them on the boil to make them move, and the lack of CC make them sluggish with passengers/load...  ...for example, the little 1l turbo Focus I had earlier in the year really struggled to gracefully get up the long, steep, partially made drive. It would either lose revs until it stalled, or would be losing traction because you had the revs to have all the power.

Perfect little town cars though.

Driven mums little Seat (same platform as the Golf), nice enough little run around.

Those 1.4 TSI:s have a lot of timingchain problems.
Also it's made in Mexico.
I'd avoid..
Maby an Opel Astra or Peugeot 308 SW?

Not heard of any issues with them really, problem you have Varche is post up any engine, any make and any car, someone will tell you to avoid them.

Worth checking the VW forums, the American Vortex one is about best going for VW. Being petrol lump they should have some good experience with it  :y
