Have been watching the cycling on the box, and must admit, watching them chucking their drinks cartons, etc, into the bushes really annoyed me. If I did it, I bet plod would be there and I would be nicked. Don't tell me someone goes around after picking up the bits.....where some of that stuff was chucked was way up and over the roadside bushes. I suppose wherever they lob it, they are immune from prosecution.
I like watching bike racing, but those actions annoy me. :o

I bet they would be the Spanish riders. Cannot imagine any of our British riders doing a thing like that ;D ;D

They usually only discard their rubbish in designated areas, then after the race has passed, a team moves in to clear it all up. :y

Disqualify them immediately, with no option to appeal: that would stop it in a trice.

Fine. That would set a good example to all other cyclists instead of the poor role model that this behaviour exemplifies. Did anyone tell them that road racing is illegal?
I used to be a cyclist, as an impoverished apprentice who couldn't afford the bus fare to work; now my Omega impoverishes me!

Since they all seem to ride as*e-up, nose on the handlebars, said carrier bags could double as nosebags!

In a similar vein, I discovered at an early age that if you come off your bike and contact the gravel that you skidded on, it ********well hurts!

I was riding down a long set of concrete steps on my bike when I was a kid (yes I was that stupid), the front wheel fell off and rolled away down the steps, while the bottom of the forks dug into the steps and threw me high over the bars. It seemed like ages before I came crashing down onto the concrete, but I hurt from head to toe when I did. ;D
It was one of the few childhood accidents & incidents which didn't result in a trip to A&E. ::)

It's still a bad example for the young and impressionable; they are, apparently, role models for those ol single-figure I.Q.s.
Just like what little I see of those overpaid oafs on the football field, spitting in front of them as they go: now every high street has its young imitators doing the same disgusting thing.
Ok, I don't expect the morons from the shallow end of the gene pool that play football to behave responsibly, but from the posts on here I gather that cyclists CAN be better behaved. Sometimes. :-\

All the races I have done have a zero tolerance for litter, no ifs, no buts, dont care if you are an amateur or a pro. There are litter zones around the feed stations where you can drop your litter without punishment. I remember one Ironman where the guy in the lead, by some considerable margin, accidentally dropped a gel wrapper outside on the litter zone. The referee didn't hesitate, DQ. Bye bye.
As someone who does a lot of spearfishing and freediving I see firsthand the effect litter has on the marine environment. It's horrendous and I often come away from a fishing trip with a load of rubbish whether or not I catch anything. Commercial fishermen aren't squeeky clean either. I once nearly swam in to the remnants of a net which was suspended mid-water at about 8 meters. It was only 2m sq but enough to have trapped me underwater had I not seen it in time.

Pity the same stern rules don't apply to non-cyclists - those people who defile our streets and beauty spots. I fear smokers are the worst offenders, expecially now that they have, rightly, been banned from smoking in pubs and restaurants. look at the filth that they leave outside those places.
Sorry to hear about your near-entanglment: no excuse there, either. >:(

I am not going to go into the whole smokers debate... that there is only one smoking area airside, there used to be four, for the whole of Gatwick tells you everything you need to know...
But whilst a personal danger at that time, I cannot see how the fishermen would be responsible for a section of net... it could easily have snagged on a rock on the sea bed and been torn off... with relatively neutral buoyancy it will drift around undetected for years... the first the fisherman will know is when they lift the net and find a hole in it... no chance whatsoever of identifying where it happened and retrieving it :-\

By far the worst offenders in the Camberley / Sandhurst area are car drivers that buy their fast food, congregate in local car parks, making lots of noise and making a nuisance of themselves well into the early hours of the morning, including revving engines and doing lots of donuts to wear their tyres out and all their fast food litter and other discarded items are strewn across the car park, which of course us council tax payers then have to pay for it to be cleared up! >:( >:( >:(
Personally, I think where the litter is branded each discarded item should incur a £100 fine for the fast food outlet. :y :y :y

Yes the 2 Maccy D's in Farnborough are prime examples in point. I often pop in for a sneaky breakfast on the way to the coast and usually swing by at about 5am before the cleaners have had a chance to clear the debris and it is quite frankly some of the most disgusting sights I have ever seen.

Using nets in an area known for snagging is asking for loss/damage to nets. They dont care about the debris they leave behind, just the fact they will have to repair/replace their net. This particular occasion was less than 100m from the shore in 10-12m of water and everyone knows that the bottom can snag a lot. There are outflow pipes and well charted rocks all over the area. I dont mind so much when they lose a lobster pot, especially if it is at a depth I can hook a line on to it ::)
