Title: Car insurance renewal... Breakdown add on.
Post by: Doctor Gollum on 17 August 2017, 19:23:08
Sorting this years renewal and have been given the option of adding full RAC cover for £137.50... and Roadside/home/recovery for £74.50...

I have cover via my bank, but this uses whichever local firm happens to be available and I was cosidering a fresh AA policy any way :-\

Twofold question is this:

Is the comprehensive RAC cover a competitive price, and does their service match that of the AA?

My Green Flag May Day renewal arrived yesterday. Both of us have personal cover,  my daughter is covered for her car & we're covered if the caravan breaks down ..... £134. So similar-ish to your quote.

Big difference however .... is your tin tent is also covered with May Day .. it certainly is NOT covered with AA or RAC  ...

Just had a look on their respective websites...

RAC £268
AA £193 (fewer features/options)

Not the hardest decision to make...

Also, I don't have a tin tent :D

I wouldn't touch the RAC with a bargepole even if they were the cheapest.  Their service is crap!  >:(

I paid the RAC around £90ish earlier this year, for joint membership (just 2 of us), roadside and recovery to my chosen place.

Might have actually been a bit less.

Based on that, £137 seems high - but I do not take out the homestart option.

The same level of cover as you have was £69 ;)

And reading the small print, trailers upto 7.5m are recovered to a single point with the car, which is plenty for my needs ;)

Includes Euroland, overnight/onward travel/courtesy car etc :y About half the cost if bought from RAC direct...

Ah, missed the euro bit earlier :y.

I've just been told we paid "seventy-something".  But I always call them on renewal, tell them they are having a giraffe, and give them a price I'm prepared to pay (which is usually the new member "offer" price minus the best cashback deal I can find).  If they refuse, I cancel, and shop around.

Have you read the small print closely? I moved away from the AA when they started putting mileage/age restrictions on my cover. Iirc it was around number of callouts/yr on old vehicles. That said, this was more than 5yrs ago so nothing to say it will be the same now.

I read it briefly... no obvious age restrictions. The only condition being that it is tied to the registration number as it is part of the insurance policy rather than a stand alone product... ;)

One big advantage of living in Euroland (Spain) is all policies include breakdown services. No companies vying for your business. You ring your insurer from roadside and they get the local recovery wagon to you including your trailer or caravan. They do basic stuff like jump starts but otherwise recover you to home or repair shop.

Competitively priced as the Omega was same to insure as the previous year in UK.

Big plus is no people in danger on roadside trying to fix a mates car.

I have been with hastings direct for 3yrs now. I never accept their renewal quote I always go online using the search facility. I am looking for an insurance that tick all the boxes including vehicle recovery. this year it was £ 296 . not too bad as all the boxes are covered.
