Post by: robson on 05 September 2017, 11:55:47
I have a spanner light, engine electronics, which comes and goes and an engine light, exhaust emissions , which comes and goes. Pedal trick gives 0340. when these lights are on the car does not start very well. Any ideas before I'm take it to the garage. 2.6 2003

The code is for cam sensor, but these are solid on V6 normally.

Wait and see if it happens again, then re-read codes

cam sensor is very easy to swap out and quite cheap to buy.   if it does fail it will likely be when hot.

When I read the codes there were codes for a cyl 4 misfire but not cam sensor. Are you certain the code is correct?

And don't take to garage. I'll pop back down if needsbe.
How longs this been going on for? Does it run rough?

Thanks for the reply James as you know I had a spanner light come on before the cam belt change.but now I get an intermittent emission light, the engine symbol. When this appears the car doesnt start very well. the car runs well without any problems. I do the pedal trick and the lights go away but then return.

Is it possible that the cam sensor wire has been pinched behind the cambelt cover?

These sensors can fail naturally though, but won't prevent starting...

Changing it involves little more than opening the bonnet ;)

If a pinched wire would it not be a constant fault?

Possibly, should be clearly visible too, but could also have been stretched slightly for clearance...

Possible, but very unlikely as I always double check :y

Car had misfire codes, but nothing for cam sensor - are you 10000% certain you've got the correct number of flashes? :y

Hello James yes I have checked it several times 0340 I took  it to my usual garage and they got cam sensor problem I think he said high voltage. I have ordered a sensor from main dealer I thought it best to get a genuine one it will be fitted on Friday morning I will let you know the outcome. The only thing I do not understand is why it comes and goes maybe it is a heat thing. Don't forget that I did have a spanner light before you did the cam belt.

is it coming on when hot?  any fine coil of wire like a cam or crank sensor will likely fail when hot and recover when cold

James thanks for your very generous offer. I think that you should keep that spare you might need it at some time. If you do come down this way and you get time do pop in.
