Title: checking 4g signal strengths without the service
Post by: Varche on 24 September 2017, 10:19:53
Here in Spain rather than in the Uk but presumably same parameters apply.

Before signing up for a 4g Internet product I would like to test the signal strength but haven't got a 4g device. Is there an app for ipad or a way of doing it?  ( I have stopped locals but they all have primitive phones so far).

This is what I have to hand:

ipad without SIM card slot

iphone 4 ,UK 3 sim card

very basic payg Spanish mobile but on the provider I might use for 4g

The nearest possible transmitters at 4g are:

10 miles away just one small but nearby hill in the way
5 to 10 miles away  but clean line of sight
possibly 3 miles away but loads of hills in the way

Predictably when you go into the phone shops the "monkeys" haven't a clue where their transmitters are.

AFAIK you would need a 4g compatible device for it to be able to "see" the signal (and hence judge it's strength). I'm sure you could buy a measuring device but tbh Itd probably be cheaper to buy a 4g phone and sell it again when you're done with it.

What he said /\ /\ /\

get a cheap 4g Android phone, there are some good free Apps around that will give good signal strength readings across the various Bands and tell you whats what.
