I should be ashamed of myself. I've been sat thinking for ages about why this V6 isn't nearly as economical as any others I have owned, and I've just realised the answer. The bleedin' thing was overcooling, temp gauge was far too low. I reckon the stat's stuck open...

James could you eplain in idiot terms (so i can understand) the difference a thermostat being stuck open would make...and what is regarded as too cool. :-?
I know obviously over heating is bad....but under heating. :-[

James, taking a week to link poor consumption and low temp is not worthy of harsh words like "muppet" and "ashamed" You are well respected here for being a likeable, clever and helpful fellow. Give yourself a break mate. :(
On the other hand, dropping half an HT lead down the plug hole, well..... ;D ;D ;D

If the engine runs cool, the Coolant temperature sensor will tell that to the engine ECU, which will then think it's running cold, and hence inject more fuel...

Oh blimey.. :y
What would be classed for running too cool....and would that be assumed from the temp gauge or externally monitored.

90 deg or below.
What's probably happening is condensation of the fuel mixture. It's been a problem for a lot longer than ECUs have been around.
I got about 5 mpg back on a 1968 Escort by replacing the thermostat.
A long time ago... :)

This has got me thinking now... my motor never gets above 90 degrees unless in traffic on a real hot day where it might scrape 92-93 ish.
Could this be affecting my consumption then? :-?

yep td should run around 90 mate!!! changed mine cos it never got hot enough way back when i first got it then spent the next three weeks worrying about it running so hot!!! but it made a difference to the economy for sure, it also made the temp go up to 98 99 on long hills but as soon as it gts on the flat it comes back down to 90ish again almost straight away, and being as regular temps here are 36 i keep a onstant eye on me temp gauge but same thing happens it always runs just over the 90!!! :y

James, you a muppet :P
TD owners, if cooling system is up for it, should run just below mid point, rising to just over midpoint after a thrashing, as per all Omegas.

yep..good scientific explanation :y

Would it be worth getting a Tech II check on the temp reading that the ECU is receiving? I think we have heard that the reading the temp gauge gives and the coolant temp from the ECU sensor can be very different and it is what the ECU is getting that is important not the instrument panel reading.

i think mine has this problem, only goes over 90 when i'm stuck in traffic...?

90 is midpoint on guage on facelifts. midpoint is what you are aiming for!

only when i'm in traffic though? sits quite a bit lower on regular driving

how much lower?
-
80-85

80-85
and your markings are 80-100? shade low but not too bad

James, might be worth putting a vacuum gauge onto one of the pipes too. A leak could also explain poor economy I am told.
