Title: Parked my astra estate......
Post by: STEMO on 20 March 2018, 12:54:10
........next to an omega saloon in a car park this morning. The omega looked quite small (side on) compared to the astra. Cars must have been growing quite a bit over the last 20 years.

Yes....I followed an abortion of a car the other day. It was a real ugly f*ucker and huge with it.

Turned out to be a Mini Cooper S Countryman and was the size of a small planet.

And there was I thinking 'mini' means small and petite.

Car SOS and Wheeler Dealers are good examples. Mike Brewer wearing a Triumph Herald or a 70's BMW is a sight to behold.  ;D

But parking spaces have, at best, stayed the same size.

I saw a 1965 Zephyr Six at a classic car show. A large family car in it's day.

It looked positively small by the standards of today.

Cars have grown, parking spaces have not. :-\

I saw a Fiat 500 XL parked next to Renault Scenic (I think, one of those people carriers), the Fiat dwarfed the Scenic.

Yet a proper Fiat 500 was so small you needed one for each foot.
I fancy an original 500, for some reason, but they go for silly money now, like most other old things which have managed to survive - apart from me.

Yes. Introduced in 1957. Two years before the original Mini.

Anybody want to pay £10 for Mr Albitz to stop him being scrapped? ;D

Ok....if we're gonna be silly. I saw a Fiat punto parked next to a chieftain tank and it made the tank look like a toy.

They should be nicked under trades description calling the present day things Minis ;D but yes cars are getting bigger with every new model compare a present day Mondeo to the last Scorpio or the latest insignia to the Omega and both Ford and GM said that after Scorpio and Omega they were going to stop making large saloons ::)

American sized cars on English sized roads. What could possibly go wrong?

Trouble is for all their growth you don't seem to get any more interior space :-\

You do in the astra. H was quite snug, J much bigger. Then doors are a foot thick now to protect you from giant minis.

No, because they all now have side impact protection girders and airbags on their airbags. So the distance between your elbow and the outside of the door is about a yard and a half. Contrast with the original Mini, where your arm rested against a bit of bent tin and all that was between you and the outside world was that piece of tin and the paint applied to it  ;D

My brother's inlaws have just replaced a 10 year old Corsa D with a new Fiat 500 twin air... FIL says it reminds him of the two stroke bikes that used to be everywhere and he has to remind himself not to drop some oil in every time he fuels it ;D

Older cars which were smaller, lighter, but not much less power than modern equivalents were much more fun to drive imo.  :)

I'm still trying to convince my mother that a 3 door Fiesta would be a good replacement for her mk1 Focus. They rarely use the back seat, the boot is bigger, and they're both struggling to get in so the longer doors would be a big help.
