My alloys are scruffy, and have been kurbed, but aren't really deeply scored either.
Can I do these myself? Is it just a case of rub down and respray?
Any specific paint / method?

I'm looking at doing my wheels myself aswell, as i've tried a few companies that do refurbs, and have been quoted between £40 and £60 per wheel!!
So, looks like a nice weekend sorting my wheels ahead.
I'm just doing the usual spray thing, sanding, prepping, spraying and lacquering.

Am sure there was a thread a few weeks aog on here, with details on refurb from annother forum (permission was given)
Was a good write up and pictures were excellent.

Mine could do with a tidy up too. We could do with a set of steelies to pass round as temporary wheels.

Well not steelies but i`ll soon have a set of cd alloys and tyres that are free for all..
So next one over the border can come and get em :y
BTW im in the process of doing some alloy refurb myself. I have a guide that I will stick on if i can get premission from the owner.. :y

Autoglym Wheel silver paint works very well on alloys, then a lacquer over the top.

can get them powder coated for that. looks better lasts longer.

I bought a set of Elite wheels 3 of which were as new but the 4th had a scratch along two spokes about 3/4 of an inch in from the lip.
I had been told about Autoglym paint and indeed ordered a couple of cans from UK . I used them on another set of wheels I re furb'd for the Omega ,see photo, but never fitted.
The autoglym paint is very good but nowhere near a match for the paint used on GM wheels .
I looked into this and after contacting various people on different sites was directed to WURTH paint and lacquer.
The finish on the elites has large metallic particles and only the Wurth paint has this mix. Their web site clearly states that it is the original paint used on German manufactured wheels.
Anyway refurbishment method aside ,the paint match is as perfect as you will get if you are blending in but if you are painting the complete wheel then it is absolutley perfect.
The photos show the two spokes that were painted .The repainted area extends up to about 3 to 4 inches from the wheel edge and includes the recess for the valve plus another one. If you save these photos and can zoom in you will just be able to see where the paint has blended but more importantly the size of the metal particles ( they are actually alluminium ). I reccomend that you use the Wurth lacquer as well as it is a very good one being UV resistent.
Re furbing the wheels is not Rocket science it takes patience,careful prepping and the ability to apply paint from an aerosol. 2 coats of paint and 3 preferably 4 coats of lacquer. Final polishing of the lacquer is done with 1500 and then 2000 grade production paper with a little soap in the lubricating water then a polishing compound like T cut and a good polish.

PC 'd wheels are great until you scrape or pierce the coating. I 've had several sets over the years some I've done 120Kmiles with ( Fitted to company cars )the finish is very robust keeping brake dust easily at bay but catch a kerb and you'll have to have them stripped and redone you can't just paint them in. Think why manufacturers don't PC them from new.

I think it would depend on the car/wheels as whether they would look right or not.
On the Caterra forum, there was a picture of some chromed Elite wheels on the same colour car as mine. Just didnt look right to me.

its preperation is similiar to a normal car paint..
only laquer must have more layers..

If the scoring is deep, you could use something like devcon aluminium filler instead of polyester filler, bugger to sand, but goes rock solid and sticks like s**t to a blanket - just remember good surface prep is key.

The chromed rims were done for the yanks as they are into tasteless tat like that. Seen them myself & they are hideous. As were most of the changes GM made for that market. Only good thing they did which er did'nt get the option of was a cup holder on the prefacelift cars.
Back to the main subject I have a refurber donw the road from me. They do not relaquer wheels after refurbing so god knows what protection there is for the paint
