Title: Witness reliability
Post by: BazaJT on 21 July 2018, 15:11:44
A recent attack on a bus in Germany has shown how unreliable even eye witness accounts can be.Passengers stated a man had dropped a backpack which then began smouldering, bus driver stated it was a fire. This I think is an easy mix up as one persons smouldering could be another persons fire. However passengers then stated the perpetrator pulled out a gun although no one was shot, yet 14 people suffered knife/stab wounds but no one said they'd seen a knife.Fortunately at last reports no one was fatally injured and police arrived and arrested the perpetrator.

Always, but always the same. Even the same person will tell four different stories to four different people. It's a combination of mixed memories, forgetting details, thinking they should remember details, stories they've been told from others, their own expectations of what's going to happen next, and what they had for breakfast last Wednesday.

It's why CPS* like to have things like videos, and even then they'll sometimes go "eee, I dunno...".
