Probably for the best. The other chappie would have been little more than 'Putin's poodle'

Yes. International arrest warrants would have been issued for anyone who so much as farted in the Kremlin.

Isnt he still the number two?
It might havebeen a good move to appoint him. He could have solved Salisbury poisoning and the downing of the Malasian airliner over Ukraine :(

It hasn't gone well for the last Interpol chappie. Arrested in China and hasn't been seen or heard from since? :-\

The previous head of Interpol has now surfaced in China on corruption charges. Don't know if they are real or bogus charges?
Russia has massively abused the Interpol Red Notice system for anybody that has incurred Putin's/Kremlin's displeasure. Bill Browder has new ones issued against him regularly, but they are then cancelled as they are politically motivated charges. Giving a Russian the top job would be like giving the local fox the keys to the hen house. What could possibly go wrong? :o :o :o
If the Russian had got the job the 194 country membership would have shrunk considerably as many countries would have resigned.
Russian & Chinese infiltration in Western companies, universities & our governance institutions is a major policy by those countries along with DPRK and Iran to a lessor extent, which is why I call those four countries an "Axis of Evil" which is likely to get worse in the foreseeable future. A good example of fox and hen house is the European OECD which monitors the Russian invasion and ceasefire in the Ukrainian Donbas. As Russia is a member of OECD 56 of the monitors are Russian, which is why Ukrainians call it the blind service, except they also report Ukrainian positions to the Russian military. :( :( :(
