Title: Standard of official letters
Post by: Varche on 06 February 2019, 21:15:02
Is appalling.

Received two more today to add to the pile

First got the deceased surname completely wrong.

The second said “ Sorry your mother has past “ among others.

If we could be bothered we would take it up. There is no point. The world is run by young folk who cannot write even simple letters.

Having gone 'toe to toe' with various major corporations in letter form, the standard is poor across the board. To the point where I  struggle to tell what point some people are trying to make!

Yes Jimmy, and if you try to point out the error of their ways, you are accused of being a grammar nazi!
However, I would rather be that than an ignoramous with a poor command of English.....

The banner running along the bottom of the screen on BBC news 24 has some proper howlers in it. Once you spot a mistake, you can't help but watch to see if it's been corrected next time round.

I seem to remember that it was one of the autocues that caught Bill Turnbull out one morning on BBC breakfast

Maybe we are grumpy old men?

Maybe it does not matter if the news banners have howlers . The key thing is getting the item over.

I guess that's how languages evolve, the howlers become the norm?  :-\

A bit like how it seems acceptable to some for the F-word to be used in everyday conversation.  ::)  Even in front of kids!  :(

The Civil Service only employs the otherwise unemployable.  I think the OP expects too much from them.
