Title: Smell of Petrol in cabin
Post by: MikeDundee on 24 February 2019, 08:43:08
Just started yesterday afternoon after driving back from Dartford, initially thought it was because had the windows open and in a lot of traffic, but driving later that day was quite strong, have found a few earlier posts on this, so wil check the breathers, fuel pipes into plenum, if none of that will have to pop it into the garage tomorrow as cannot get underneath the car, no jack and sits to low due to irmy suspension, if none of the latter assume may be fuel filter or issue with fuel pipes. Will keep you all posted!!!

Long time no see, Mike!  :y

Worth removing the circular cover in the boot floor and checking the fuel lines as they emerge from the tank too.

This ^ they often corrode there and the whiff comes in around the rear seat area.  :y

Checked and they are all fine...

Cleaned the breathers out, cannot see any issues with the fuel pipe connections to the plenum, all tight, ran the engine still a strong smell of fuel coming from left hand side of engine bay, so looks like will be popping it into local garage tomorrow.

Also no visible signs of any leaks underneath the car or in the engine bay either.

Breather pipe still correctly attached to the purge valve?

Sits on the back of the 135 head next to the breather box :y

If post accident, it could be that a pipe has be pinched/split as it passes through the inner wing to the charcoal cannister  :-\

Check the schrader valve on the fuel rail 👍

i had this, changed the purge valve, even though 'they don't fail.' Cured it. As above, schrader could alo be culprit - happily not some Vx-specific part but one from any tyre is identical.  :)

You don’t need plenum off to check the valve 👍 it’s a bit tight but take the cap off and run the car. And observe the valve. Mine was bubbling out. I swapped it for one out of a new tyre valve. JD 👍

....just to add it of course might not be that. 👍

Well eventually found the cause of the issue, the two pipes run along below the coolant tank, small hole next to the jubilee clip is letting petrol out, maybe possible to cut the section off and reconnect?, otherwise a whole new section of pipe, which has a sealed connection further up and small metal section connecting back in below the scuttle. Have tried to search for this part but cannot find anywhere so far.

ISO7480 Fuel hose of suitable diameter plus stainless pipe clamps should see it done :y

Would assume these;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mikalor-W1-Spring-Hose-Clips-Fuel-Air-Water-Gas-Silicone-Hose-Clamps/322510432619?hash=item4b171ea96b:m:mqRRSm0yBoe_4SeruDe4qVw:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NAUTILUS-MARINE-FUEL-HOSE-ISO7480-A1-/302868733427

Means the hose will need to be joined, so will need some form of connector to fit inside connecting hose

I distrust those clamps on a low pressure/low temp cooling system. I would never use them on a pressurised fuel system. Never! Those a clamp that is tightened by a screw thread. I've never had issues with branded Jubilee clamps in these applications, but do understand why you might want to use the specific sized, fuel hose clamps.

That hose is extremely expensive. Go to a proper motor factors or hydraulic supplier who will cut however much you want off the reel for under £1 a metre.
