Title: Stuck with me another year
Post by: Diamond Black Geezer on 30 March 2019, 16:44:29
The old girl passed her annual Ministry of Transport health inspection today, then!

Few nigglies, annoyingly a rear spring was cracked... never noticed, and I was under there checking stuff like that only the other week. Sadly that's bye-bye LSC-springs whch I got from an OOF member a number of years ago, they did me about 40k (the fronts are still going strong, mind)

Start pricing up some alternatives, then, now. Boge seem solid offerings.

Front bearing showing marginal signs of wear,  thought that rather odd as that was brand new 4 years ago, genuine KOYO.. hmmm.  ???

206,111 miles and counting!  :)

Depends on where it's cracked... The last 1" of a pigtail isn't the end of the world... Two or three coils on the other hand  ;)

Congratulations on the MOT pass, especially for a 1996 car. I was looking at a 2007 Astra yesterday online, and it had rust in the sills and brake back plates.

Boge seem solid offerings.
I personally use Sachs on mine. Both Boge and Sach are part of the ZF group, so potentially possible they are the same part.

Its also one of the few times I'd be happy to use ECP for them (but as mail order - click and collect stock will have been on the selves since the iron age).  And never use Car Parts 4 Less (part of ECP), because *any* issues are a true nightmare to resolve.

Ta gents, also thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, we've known each other for donkeys years, to the point I was round his buying some Omega parts a week or two after the MoT and I said "Oh, by the way, I never paid you for the MoT - We just got chatting and forgot!" his response was "Yeahhh, it's fine, I knew we'd square up eventually!" right gentleman, proper 'old school' mechanic, as well.

Mind you, now we live a couple of hours drive away I make sure I pay him on the day, now  :D

To be honest unless it's physically lethal he always gives me a gentlemanly heads up with anything, because he knows I'll do it asap. I always even bring up spare track rods, drop links and general other 'service' parts.

Will have a nosey at the Sachs/Boge. I was under there a matter of weeks ago replacing a rear wishbone (will do both eventually, as at 206k the rear bearings will be close to their natural end) and did make a point of looking, and saw no snapped bits, but that's why I'm glad we have MoTs (specifically decent MoT-ers), even though some people see them as a curse and a waste of time.
