We are nearly at the end of the fourth house emptying following death of a relative.
Had a variety of not so brilliant experiences on the first three. This one in Stranraer area is quite good , well as good as these things can be.
The staff at the tip are pleasant and help you unload. No turning you away because you are not a tax payer in your foreign reg car. Or asking if “ if I hire a van to bring a load of furniture down , will it be alright? “ then next day being turned away initially. The best thing is that they have a community run recycling shop next door with a 20 year lease for “ one mans junk another mans treasure”. the shop does a roaring trade and also does packages to give people setting up home a start.
Why aren't there similar schemes elsewhere or have I just been unlucky before.?

I think all council tips should pick out the good stuff and sell it in a shop
better still, let a charity do it
less landfill, and greener than all the energy used to make a new item.
there was a big company who fixed "tipped" washing machines and other white goods and sold them on
people have too much money now and throw away far too much :(

I have 2 tips in striking distance from me and both have shops! :y
A while ago I bought a single tap basin, pedastal and close coupled toilet, all in excellent condition and quite modern for £20! :y
They also have a good selection of paperbacks and usually charge £1 for 10! :y
One of the tips however is in Deben and as I reside in Darzet, I expect they will rumble me one day and drag me off in chains! ::) :-\ ;D

Thinking about this, there is also a 3rd tip nearby in Zummerzet. :)
I think I'd need to drink more zoider to get away with using that one though.... :-\ ;D

My official (ie, Northamptonshire Council) local tip has no such shop, and probably lack the space as surrounded on all sides by houses and industry.
My usual, nearest tip (Oxfordshire - but they frequently check you are an Oxfordshire resident) only have a small container for a shop, and I suspect the staff at the site pocket the takings.
However, Northamptonshire do run a site near me for recycling stuff, and I think its a great resource - both to get rid of serviceable stuff, and for anyone needing cheap items. Very convenient. Life is too short to dick around with the idiots on Freecycle and the like.
