Title: Dad's Vectra key question...
Post by: Liam on 26 August 2008, 22:39:00
Hello,

My old man's just picked up his awesome new W-reg Vectra GLS estate.  MM-mmmm.  Almost the same dark green as my meggy so they'll look truly beautiful next to each other :).

Anyway it's only got one key which looks exactly the same as my meggy's so I was wondering if he could do the same as I did for me meggy to get a spare?

So that's forget about the main dealer as they probably want about £120, right?  Get a whole key off ebay being sure it's the correct make inside (i.e. megamos), get a blank blade and get it cut, then find a friendly tech 2 owner to link the transponder and remote to his veccy?

That about right, and can the friendly tech 2 owners on here do a veccy?

After that, of course, I've told him he needs to identify the function of all the blanks and get the missing features from ebay, get a full leather interior (i'm guessing no leccy or memory on a veccy?), then after all that's done think about the V6 conversion ;D  OK maybe not that last bit...

Cheers,

Liam

You dont even need a Tech 2.

Put the key in the ignition and turn to ON (without starting is better)
Then I think you press the open buttons of each key fob in turn you want associating with the ecu.

Like I said I think thats how you do it, not sure if its the open or close key or if you have to press it more than once but someone else should be able to confirm or deny  :y

You do need a Tech 2 to program a new key :y

I did exactly what the original post has done, bought a key from ebay (although it was not the same make ::)) But The Boy helped me there :y he then had to use his Tech 2 to program the new key chip to my car.
If your battery goes flat and you renew it, then I am sure you have to do the sequence you are talking about with the ignition on and pressing the buttons.. :y

It's generally the immobiliser that you need programming with Tech II or similar and not all Vectra's had an immobilser, most did though!

The procedure of button pressing is usually for re-syncing the fob.

Yup, most Veccy-B's with alarm use the same Megamos fob as prefacelift Omega.  Any transponder will do. OOF shop sells suitable blades and transponders.

Tech2 required to program key.  A carpass for the car is essential.  Both Mark and I can do it - see http://theboy.omegaowners.com.  We can supply the keyblade and transponder inc programming for £20, but we're currently not able to supply the remote fobs.

I've got a '96 Omega, and just got a new key cut and programmed from Mr Minit the Shoe repairer and key cutter.
They charged £26 for everything..... Vauxhall dealer wanted £65!
I don't know if its the same key, but it might be worth asking.

Doh if I'd known about the shop I'd have gone there!  Ah well I've ebayed the bits and will be in touch (with The Boy) in the not too distant future.

Cheers,

Liam

P.S.  For information's sake, what exactly can you do without tech 2?  I thought it was just resync an existing fob but some people seem to suggest you can link up new fobs etc.  Indeed one ebay criminal is selling the information to reprogram your remote keyfob for a fiver!  He does say in his smallprint that this wont 'reset the key chip immobiliser' but I think he's deliberately misleading people into thinking they can fully link up a new/ebay key to a car with no tech2. >:(

Without tech2 or some other programming device, all you can do is resync the remote fob.

The £5 info probably covers resync, and taping the working immobiliser chip from working key to ign barrel, so any key will work.
