I dont have a PPL but took sevral lessons back in the early nineties in a cessna. It was great , I was supervised but did do some of the controls myself.
It cost £80 per hour lesson and I think that I needed 40 hours flying time plus an exam to get PPL.
In the end it was the cost that stopped me........Any spare cash and I would love to give it another go. :y :y

We flew at about 2000 feet over Birmingham so I had great views.
The cockpit was so cramped that my instructors shoulder was resting against mine.
I remember thinking about that "Some Mothers do Have them" episode where the instructor had a heart attack, and left Frank Spencer to fly the plane himself..............Not a good thought to have. ;D

cost these days is £150 per lesson and i would need a minimum of 42 hours in the air.

Its one of these passions that i have always had, i few months ago i went up in a glider and was allowed to control it for the large portion of the time, totally loved that as well.

If you can afford to do it then go for it Jay, the exam will be a doddle :y

Yes it`s expensve to get a PPL but go for it!  ;)

You`ll never regret it!!!!! :y

Once you`ve got your PPL, you could always build your own `plane; like I did!....not really much cheaper to run, but it can go a lot further/faster! ;)

Kevin, do you need a license for a glider......

there is something very calm and relaxing about gliding

Hi Debs

Just looking at your yellow beauty. I take it you have a PPL. How long did it take you to achieve? :)

Went to malta in may and just had to take a flight in the De-havilland flying boat which goes to the island of gozo. Only a twenty minute flight but it was great, sat in the co-pilots seat, it was fun.

Always wanted to see a Shorts Sunderland, but I don't think there are any of these left flying nowdays!

Not currently. There is a "gliding certificate" that is administered by the British Gliding Association but it is on the cards that we will end up being licensed in the next couple of years. Not necessarily a bad thing, as long as the powers that be recognise that there's a world of difference between a glider and a 747 (they don't normally).

The training route is very different for glider pilots. It concentrates on getting you in the air and building your skills as a pilot long before you need to start studying anything, and, even then, you only need to learn what's relevant to you and your safety in the air.

I like gliding because it's more about your skills at controlling the aircraft, reading the weather, making decisions on the fly and making the most of natural sources of lift. No two day's flying are the same in a glider whereas I have met power pilots who get tired of flying somewhere for a cup of tea and then flying back home again. It's horses for courses, I guess. It also is relaxing in a busy sort of way. The lack of engine noise helps I'm sure.

I have done a great proportion of my PPL but funds do not allow me to continue... The exams aren't too bad but will keep you busy :y :y :y

I've also done a lot of gliding, which I agree with Kevin in the fact that it is a more skilful method of flight in some respects!!

Just out of interest Kevin... Is that similar to a Viking?

Mine's an LS4 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolladen-Schneider_LS4

A viking's basically a Grob 103 Twin Acro IIRC? Is so, it's obviously a lot lighter being a single seater so it's a bit more nimble on the controls. Other than that it's pretty similar. Slightly flatter glide (40:1 versus 36:1) and it has a retractable wheel and water ballast.
