Title: Forum Guidelines - welcoming new members
Post by: TheBoy on 12 August 2008, 18:28:59
Try to keep this to members whose 'hello' thread is less than a week old - I've had to send out lots of reminders recently  :'(

General Posting

Keep posts relevant, short, and on topic, especially on Help threads, and meeting organisation threads.  General Chat is the only area where we expect things will go off at a tangent!

Keep titles relevent, and not just 'Help me' etc.  Not everybody has time to read every thread Wink

Use English, no text speak which is notoriously difficult to read.

Members being offensive to other members will not be tolerated.

DON'T USE CAPITALS!  LOOKS LIKE YOUR SHOUTING!!

No discussion of acquiring or distributing copyrighted material.  If you legally own/licenced the material, thats fine.

No thread bumping (posting on a thread, purely to get it to back to top of the list).

Welcoming new members - keep this only to those members who have posted their hello thread within the last week.

My method is only to welcome members IF the welcome is under number 15, ie on the first page.

Maybe everyone should consider a member 'welcomed' if it has hit 2 pages and then not add any more welcomes?

I think many people do. But then somebody drags up a whole bunch of older ones, then everyone sees it on front page, and welcomes them.

Please quickly check the date of the first post in the thread ;)

FFS - 13 out of the threads on the first page of Newbie section are older than a week!!!

PLEASE stop dragging up older threads in there - its not fair on new joiners.

Once again, I am forced to drag this up as I've had to send out a load more PMs.

PLEASE do not add to Newbie threads that are older than 7 days!

Too save time space and what sounds like hassle could you not simply have an automated welcome email/ PM from the group admins.

Save space on forum and surely new members could be made welcome whilst early days of posting. :-?

To be honest if i join a new forum i very rarely even look at welcome/newbies thread....just jump in and start posting.

Not the case for everyone though.

When I joined, it took me a week to pluck up the courage to post a hello, and when the welcomes came in it made a hell of a difference.

An automated PM is sent at registration.

The Newbie area is very valuable, and helps those not so familiar with computers/forums etc

Everything I say or do is wrong in someones eyes, so I just dont care anymore.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Great feeling isnt it not caring....allows you too do and say all them things youve always wanted too but couldnt and do things that are frowned on.

Like wearing womens clothes on a friday night out on the town and calling yourself Mildred... :y

I simply do not use the name Mildred anymore....  :P

FFS, I have just spent the last 30 minutes deleting posts in the Newbie section.  What part of:

Welcoming new members - keep this only to those members who have posted their hello thread within the last week.
is so rather difficult to understand?

Keeps you off the streets .....  :)

Seriously ... can all but the latest and maybe the next page not be locked ?? That would give a maximum of 30 newbie posts that could be "used" ..

If you welcome new members, start from the bottom of the first page and work your way up.

That keeps the latest members at the top of the page.

Do not start from the top and work your way down!
