Title: 2010 Mercedes 320CDI
Post by: amba on 25 February 2020, 20:06:13
Had a look at the above this afternoon as Im unsure how much longer my Elite will continue with the 100 miles + a day I still demand from it and well just had a look.

Seemed well appointed but curious what the opinions of others where on the Merc....it is a weasel though !!

Gollum: W211 will live a long time if well serviced, very reliable comfortable car.

The Boy: no merc after 1995 was actually designed, it's just a parts bin.

Lord Opti: why would you want a diesel German taxi? It kills penguins and polar bears. Buy an E63 instead.

STEMO: The MPG will be rubbish, you can only go 70 anyway have you thought about a diesel astra?

Me: have you considered a milk float?

Thread complete   ;D

In all seriousness, I understand the facelifts (post 2007ish) are much improved, but if you don't keep the servicing up, you'll trigger the wallet thickness sensor in the driver's seat and it will punish you. 50 miles each way, you should see 40ish.

Never had a W211 ::) and it if I did, it would have the M113 lump 8) I would be incredibly picky about some of the engines offered between 2003 and 2010... V6 diesel included. Some of the issues don't manifest themselves before 100k+. Plenty of info on the Web about them stretching chains, clogging up, heavy oil usage and randomly seizing up.

Either buy an earlier one with the straight six diesel, or the later W212 model. :y

I thought the early w212's suffered with injector issues in 250 and 350 CDI guises?  :-\

if it's the same engine as in the R320 I had, then they suffer from turbo actuator problems. As they are apparently a calibrated pair, Merc only sell an actuator with a turbo. I was quoted £2000 by a Merc indie to replace mine ..... I had my actuator refurb'd for £100  :y

Most of the major issues were ironed out by the time the W212 was released in 2010, besides those aren't the same engine, one 4 pot and one v6 ;)

With a couple of exceptions, namely the bi turbo v12 and m112/3 engines, any engines built between 2003 and 2009 will almost certainly be troublesome...

The petrol V6/v8 is pretty much guaranteed to need a £3k rebuild if the eml comes on with a chain rattle. Ignore it and you're replacing the engine. Post 2009 much better.

Not so fast.

Do your homework, check the Mot history and service history and look at the car. Make an informed decision rather than an Internet one ;)

I am aware of this, AIUI, the same 4 pot covers everything from e180 to e250 cdi, albeit with different turbocharging setups. However I thought they both suffered with injector issues.  :-\

Not that I am taking against them you understand. TBH if I were in the market for a big estate car they would be my number one pick, in either 4 or 6 pot guise depending on how many miles I was doing, and how much money I wanted to give to Shell  8)

Just been considering a suitable replacement for my 3.2 when the time comes.Spending 24mpg on a v6 petrol can see the sense in trying to improve that as running costs in fuel compensate initial outlay.

Have no intention of buying new as my age and working life span doesnt justify it against depreciation so my mind wandered towards similar body size saloon car as the Elite with respectable performance and equipment...the Mercedes E class came to mind as local garage has a 09 320cdi with 85k for sub 7k

A 2011/12 E350 petrol or imported E500 4matic would be hard to argue against as longterm transport...

or an E63 before they made it a v6 ;D

They did what? Silly Mercedes, pandering to Greta. What year did they turn it into a eunuch?

It's no eunuch. Asian lad from corner shop has one and it sounds like armageddon when he puts his foot down. Unlike transit vans that sound very loud with a baked bean tin at the back, the merc actually moves too.

Just checked, post '16 W213 is a 4.0 v8... Phew, that was close...

once a used Mercedes gets its hooks into your wallet, 24mpg from a paid for and cheap to run car will feel like a bargain......

That's where my mind set keeps coming back to Nick...It owes me nothing and drives like a dream just conscious about the inevitable rot that seems to kill them all eventually and I  like a "plan in mind" before the a decision needs to be made.Would like to think I can get another couple of years from mine but who knows !!

Had two Mercedes a 190e & an E430 neither of them cost me anything more than service items, they were both low mileage one owner cars with full history, but in all honesty the Omega was a more comfortable car to ride in, the Range Rover however is by far the most comfortable vehicle I've ever driven.

The Boy: no merc after 1995 was actually designed, it's just a parts bin.
Having a bro who has spent the last 30 years trying to deal with Merc's designers* and help fix their issues in the face of complete ignorance and incompetence, I get to hear all too regular how bad all post 1990 Mercs are.  Bro has got so pissed off dealing with said idiots, he's decided to see out the end of his career designing for a milk float automotive manufacturer.

*they are not designers, they draw a car, they then look through the Bilstein catalogue and randomly pick some suspension parts, see what electrical gubbins is in Robert Bosch's catalogue, and then scratch their heads when it is a sack of shite.

Thanks for heads up guys....I will walk past then
Marvellous choice :y
