My sister and I were in front, and to the left as you look, of Buck house to see the Royal family and Winston come out on the balcony to acknowledge the cheering crowds. Although only 9, it made a big impression on me. A lovely family friend took us, and lifted us on to a pillar of some sort so that we could see. Very impressive even at that age. :y

A great memory to have from a great point in history.

Historically and nationally a very important date to remember. But it should not be forgotten that many were still suffering and dying in the war against Japan,I wonder if as much will be made of VJ Day?
-
Lots of Union flags hung outside houses on our street, but a few people have England flags hung out, which I find a little bemusing.
-
But them the same rnt thay. Innit :D
-
Same here. A few England flags and even a white rose flag. If it's all you've got, I suppose.......
-
House across the road has one of each.
-
Would a Swiss flag be inappropriate?
Asking for a friend ::)
-

Yes indeed, poor French Albs will be most offended. ;D

It was a joke Dave, but I don't have smilies. Sorry if it came across as me seriously having the hump.
Ive just noticed it was a white flag. I just read French flag and posted a reply.

Yes, just spent a great day siting on my daughters front garden with a Union and England fag flying, with some neighbours obeying the social distancing rules and also having flags out.
Sat outside listening to war time music on Alexa. My choice was Gracie Fields, the great Lancashire lass, Glen Miller and Vera Lynn. I have always loved their songs and music, but this took me back to my days in the 1950's when my parents, grandparents spoke about them, and I listened to those artists work on the Light programme. 8) 8) 8) :y
All that was needed was the Battle of Britain flight of the Lancaster, Spitfire and hurrican to fly over and that would have put me back to those years shortly after the wars end. :)

We had the Red Arrows fly over this morning London bound

Nobody goes south of the river these days... ::)

A family not far from me were putting up bunting/flags this morning about 7am as I walked the dog. This afternoon they were out in their garden with the same kind of music as Lizzie had playing.
Lizzie I hope you had the union flag flying the correct way up??

Oh yes Baza, coming from a Royal Naval family I well know how the Union flag MUST be hung, as failure to do so risked being placed on charge ;D ;D ;D ;)
Indeed the Union flag I have is from the 1950’s and, at the insistence of my Chief Petty Officer of Signals father to adhere to Regulations, was cut by me out of a huge, main flagstaff White Ensign that was flown at the Dartmouth Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. I treasure it to this day and it always comes out to be displayed at the time of National celebration. ;)

We had a (socially distanced) street party this afternoon, as part of the celebration and appreciation of those who fought. I think we are all a little bit pickled, so will be in fine voice for the just gone 9pm sing song.

At 11.00 this morning the haunting sound of someone playing the Last Post on a bugle drifted across the valley. :y

I've forgotten now .... though I've done 'Colours' .... a good few times :y :y It was made very difficult to clip it to the flagpole upside ;)
