Looks like it was a fire triggered explosion in the port.

There is/was a massive silo building there that looks to be what exploded. Even flour dust can be highly explosive under the right conditions.

That said it has been suggested that there was an industrial accident at a fireworks factory... Although the blast itself looked to be quite innocuous... certainly not a military type blast as the explosion itself was clean... Essentially an almighty boom but none of the associated side effects of a nuclear/chemical blast such as melted concrete and a completely flattened city :-\

Apparently 2750 tonnes of ammonia nitrate, which had sat unsecured in a warehouse for 6 years. An accident waiting to happen in other words.  :(

Looking at the aftermath, the silos are still just about standing. Which is impressive.

Yeah, makes you wonder why the WTC towers failed after the 9-11 attack. No i'm not a conspiracy theorist.

Have you seen what an Avgas and molten aluminium fire does to steel?

explosions and fires don't have the same effects. The damage in Beirut was caused by the material and blastwave(which is all an explosion is)of the explosion moving rapidly away from the site.

Indeed  :y

Pretty impressive hole next to the silos... Has the makings of a nice lido once they tidied up.

Always best to take a positive from a negative. :)

I;m sure in our younger days, we all experimented with mixing Mr Fothergills and hair dye ingredients.  Before they put all the inhibitors in the stuff.

Boys will be boys.

As 12 year olds we mixed water with calcium carbide lumps and collected the acetylene in balloons and attached glass tubes and off we went with matches to torch wasps nests - very effective in stone walls.

I found the generator from a 500v Megger quite effective against wasps.
