Title: Plumber Concerns
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 12 August 2020, 20:06:22
An OAP lady friend of mine has had a plumber out to service her gas fire/backboiler. ::)

Set off ok from what she has described.  But then mentioned he didnt know how to strip it even though he had previously worked for the council and done thousands like it. :y

Managed to remove a few parts, said it was full of soot, condemed it saying there were no baffles and gas wasnt getting through.  He didnt even know what the unit in the alcove was near the fire. ( Central Heating Pump) Charged her £120, didnt give a receipt. :-X

Allthough there is a report sheet I noted this had him down as a Corgi registered Gas man.  I thought this had all changed to Gas Safe engineers now are Corgi was defunct. :-\

I have my concerns about this and am starting to think this guy needs looking into. also found out that that he has not given reciepts to 3 other people that I know of.

Receipts can be zero balance invoices cross referenced to quote/invoice upon completion rather than 'recieved £x from Y for 123 work.' ;)

Baxi Bermuda ?
pretty old technology ,but very simple to work on
I've done plenty too  , i'm not a corgi or a gas safe registered part swapper either  :-X
I used to check the connections with leak detection spray etc ,seen plenty of gas safe/corgi who don't
as for soot, that's what the hoover is for when you do a service

£120 is about right including vat (if he didn't just pocket the cash  :-X)
check the gas safe register
https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer/ (https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer/)
I imagine you can report to trading standards

might be worth getting an actual  GOOD gas safe engineer to look ,
many will just try to sell a combi or heat only wall hung for a few thousand

That was another thing mentioned, he didnt bring one.  Over the years I have had many people do my gs service on the boiler and the fire, and all have brought all thier own equipment, done a smoke test, and tested the gas pressure.  This guy failed on all of them.

I will be checking with trading standards tomorow to see if he is registered with them.

Nothing given or even offered.

Gas safe replaced Corgi in 2009 so his paperwork is a little out of date :-X
