I will sign it, but I'm having great difficulty understanding why an emergency services worker is more important than any other innocent member of the public.  I truely believe that all Murders should result in Life imprisonment whoever the victim. Whether they be a serving police officer, or a drugged up prostitute, or a mother of 3 from the home counties, or a preacher from the Jehovah's Witnesses.

As I say, I will sign it.

And have.

Agree with New POD on this and if we are not to have the death sentence* then life should mean life and not let out some years down the line.
* I'm not advocating that the death sentence should return.
Signed anyway.

I won't be signing it.

A life sentence is already mandatory for murder convictions. These people were found not guilty of Murder.

A life sentence is also an option when sentencing for manslaughter. These people were convicted of Manslaughter, but the judge in this case decided the offence didn't justify a life sentence. I understand the CPS is asking for an appeal into the sentence. If so, then a life tariff is still possible.

The maximum prison sentence the court can impose for causing death by dangerous driving or careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs is 14 years; for causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving it is five years; and for causing death by driving whilst unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured it is two. So potentially you have a mandatory life sentence for causing the death of an emergency worker whilst driving uninsured, yet only 2 years for everyone else?

Laws made up on the back of one event are usually bad laws.

The Policeman, was doing his job, and they dragged him for 1 mile down a road, then, denied they had been driving...

I'm not going to argue about your reasons, for not signing, I think he couldn't impose a life sentence because of there age.

I'm also a believer that the public should be asked to vote on the return of the death penalty.

Agreed, but the jury found them not guilty of murder. The implication is therefore that the accused were unaware that the Policeman was trapped and being dragged. In which case the correct verdict is Manslaughter.

One of the defendants was 18, the other was 17. Not sure what the rules are for the 17 year old, but the 18 year old could certainly have been given life - and still might if the CPS appeal succeeds.

I'm also a believer that the public should be asked to vote on the return of the death penalty.

Which means abandoning the European court of Human Rights - which the UK helped set up after the attrocities of WW2.

Whilst I understand, and sympathise with, the feelings of the family (and many others), my understanding is that the definition of "murder" includes the requirement that it is "premeditated" ... ie "planned for" or "considered" ... in this case, it was not proved that they "intended" to cause his death. Therefore the conviction of "manslaughter" was probably the correct one.

As to making offences against "emergency workers" more severe than against "normal" people .. at what point do you draw the line ...  is an off duty, in civilian clothes, policeman an emergency worker or not ???  Is a civilian who is giving first aid, or pulling an injured person from a burning car NOT an "emergency" worker ??  Opens up a very large "can of worms" that may cause more problems than it solves.......

Not something I will be signing I'm afraid.

I have an inherent discomfort in valuing any one person above another based on what they do, or indeed other characteristics, which is the whole point of this proposed law. It's a  similar discomfort I have with the way military personnel are venerated in certain countries above the rest of the 'mere mortals'.

This is before we get onto the enforceability of such a law, which entwood alludes to.

Like others, I am against her desire to have emergency workers singled out.

Nylon, it's cheaper and it chafes. Apparently. And it will annoy the liberalists... Which is an added nicety...
