I'm in need of a new undermat for the front nearside (the spongey soundproofing, moulded in, fits between the carpet and the floor. Preferably without the contents of a sealife centre living in it...!
If anyone has one laid about? :D

I left mine out when the matrix failed and just put the carpet back in... ::)
Handy hint, Elite carpet is thicker than the GLS/Plod hessian stuff. ;)

Stop making me spend more money! I'm very easily led... I have half a mind to go to my local carpet shop and make a full set from scratch!

If you used thick closed-cell foam, like a sleeping or exercise mat, you could be done by lunchtime

Last time I went to a breakers and asked for some Omega bits he pointed merrily at a Vectra and told me to take whatever tickled my fancy and he'd do a fair price...
Given the amount of sponge I've now removed I will be taking the DIY approach and making my own. :y

:y checked and dried it today. Might have it all dried out by tomorrow.
Mrs G had noticed that when I was setting off the other day that there was an emptying of water over the drive, but I had naively thought that was from the scuttle...! Probably get 5mpg better now.

Wanting to replace the foam in an Omega, I guess the first cars to look for and hopefully get what is needed would indeed be Omegas.... :y

You'll be unlikely to find any in anything lke serviceable condition given how readily it absorbs water.
Also, if I recall correctly, it is fitted after the wiring and before the rest of the car and is a single piece that covers the front footwells, centre console and firewall.
So there's that ::)

You don't know until you actually have a look in some breakers. I have 5 breakers - three of which live outside and have done for the last 5 years or so. None have wet footwells.
Because the foam is moulded to the shape of the floor pan and the wiring tray, when cut along the edge near to the transmission tunnel towards the join under the seat, and across forwards of the wiring tray, the profile of the floor pan holds it in place. The seat obvious needs removing to do it properly, but the seat mounting rails which form part of the floor pan more or less dictate its position when in place. A little bit of automotive spray adhesive doesn't go amiss along the cut joint.
It goes without saying that any cut through the rubber top surface and into the foam needs to be done with the sharpest of blades...
I little bit of thought and imagination goes a long way to finding a satisfactory solution to many problems - being negative is counterproductive :y

The water soaks up into it and it cracks over time with the heat soak from the exhaust.
Having seen the consequences of what a leaking heater matrix does to it, I wouldn't waste my time trying to remove a second hand one. If it matters, closed cell foam can be used to replace it or expanding foam.
Last Omega I removed it from simply had the carpet put back in. Visually, you couldn't tell the difference.

Assuming that the scuttle drain on the donor car has not been blocked and leaked into the passenger footwell, the windscreen or matrix has not leaked, I don't see a problem in using a good used piece. The profile will be correct, the height perfect and it should be the easiest method of replacement rather than cutting closed foam sections or using expanding foam which in my opinion would be too messy. It's easy enough to establish whether used insulation in the footwell of a breaker is suitable. If its wet, go to the be the next one. Can't he simpler than that.
You wouldn't fit any used trim item in a car that wasn't up to scratch anyway.

Just cut the wet section with a Stanley knife, take it out of the car and dry it off. Part of mine has been hanging up in my shed for the last week and is now dry, ready to be refitted to the car. There may be a few cracks and the odd piece fallen off but it isnt seen so doesnt really matter too much :y
