Title: Time for me to be abused
Post by: STEMO on 07 November 2020, 18:57:21
But I'm used to it.
Mrs Stemo's car is five years old. It's a 66 plate astra K 1.6 diesel in red. It's immaculate and has only covered 31,000 miles. But......she is getting fidgety about it, as we all do, and wants a new (used) one when things settle down.
Now for the abuse. The shortlist so far is, in order of pref, A class, Civic or golf. The golf is my favourite but she thinks they are too 'ordinary'.

Go for the bright yellow one. She only cares about the colour, because she's lacking the Y chromosome.

When I traded it, for my current astra, the salesman said 'That's unusual, we'll soon retail that'. It didn't even make it on to the website, someone saw it in the car park, not even prepped, and bought it.

We were talking about this today, Varche. I think she would consider it, although it's an expensive option. But we have no off street parking, so nowhere to put a charger.

Our old neighbour had a brand new A class a couple of years ago she didn't like it at all, swopped it for a Honda Civic which she loves . I drove the A class a few times liked it apart from the stop start nonsense but I switched it off, surprised at how quick it was.

I told her that she should get a charger at work, thus encouraging the staff to go 'green'. Then put a lockable post in front of it with 'HEADTEACHER PARKING' written on it.

It's probably going to be one of those two, but the downside with the civic is that it's glacially slow with the diesel/auto combination. A class 200d is quite acceptable.
I'm getting a headache now, so I'll stop.

Yeah, I read the 1.5 is a Renault dci, same as in her captur. But the larger diesel isn't Renault.

Its a relatively nippy little engine in the Renault but its made from plastic and cardboard, so weighs three fifths of far call.
A class probably weighs a bit more ?

Nowt wrong with the Renault 1.5dci, despite it being French, but it's probably been fettled in the A class. The engine in my astra is a fiat, believe it or not, although it probably bears little resemblance to the original. Why develop a new engine when you can buy one off the shelf, alter the characteristics, and stick your own peripherals on it?

No experience of the civic.

My golf, despite being a milk float was identical inside to all the other golfs. It looks boring, but feels a quality product, everything you touch feels nice and well made.

A girl on my team has a 19 plate A-class and that was the exact opposite. The interior looks like a mini S-class, but it felt like it was built down to a price.

That said, both were nice and quiet at motorway speeds. Tbh I don't think you'd go wrong with either car.

I just don't like the idea of Mercedes dealers. The nearest one to me is in Wakefield and they have a reputation of looking down their noses at anyone driving anything less than a brand new £40,000+ model.
It could be worse. My mate traded his Audi Q against a Jaguar EPace (I think) and they looked at the Q like it was a piece of shit  ;D

Try this...

If that's not quite what you wanted, give them a call anyway as they can probably source it.

My E Class came from them, and I found them very easy to deal with, and although they aren't a Mercedes Dealer per se, they are an official Mercedes service centre so have access to the slightly higher mileage stock from MB Sheffield  :y

Lets face it, all franchised dealers are scum.  But the more apparently prestigious the marque, the more crap the dealers are. So that means the likes of Jaguar and Mercedes dealers are probably the worse out there, now BMW and Audi have dropped down to Ford levels of prestigious.

A class does have a variety of reliability concerns according to my contact, but then all modern Mercedes do TBH.  However, if you are only going to keep it for the warranty period, is that such an issue, except the inconvenience of potentially being carless until the dealer has a slot? Depreciation on MB's coming to end of warranty can be quite high, though less on the A class, as somebody will always buy it just because its Mercedes Benz and its a cheap way of keeping up with the Jones'

Oh, and that reminds me, Big Bro who had to go without aircon for several months last year in his brand new S Class due to lack of availability of parts for the unreliable PoS was finally offered £500 off a new Mercedes Benz as a goodwill gesture for the inconvenience.

He took the option to tell them to shove the money up their jacksie.  And has since handed back the car as the lease expired.  Needless to say, despite his inability to learn from mistakes*, he has not gone for another Merc ;D

* He bought a Mk2 Grandad 2.8 Ghia back in the day.  Kept driving it even though the petrol gauge read empty, because the low fuel light didn't come on. Obviously the inevitable happened. Next tank, he did exactly the same, waiting for the fuel light to come on, with the same result ;D

Did he not see the light in the overhead console between the mirror and the sunrooof? :o actually that could dtart with a 'how'... It was always on on my Mk2 Grannies...

Along with the 'low screenwash', 'low oil' and 'low coolant' ones ;D
No, because that light didn't come on.  Hence he ran out of fuel twice ;D

We traced the fault to the connector behind the glovebox if memory serves. It hadn't been plugged in.  Hence none of those check lights worked ;)

Hopefully its a future I wont be around to see when it gets here. Internal combustion engines are exciting sexy machines. Tarted up milk floats never will be.  :)

I love the ICE, but the milk float suits the wife and round town driving, plus the traffic light grand prix performance is nothing short of stunning  :y

............and it handles rather well to

Late to the party. I've driven/owned all three, granted a lot older than you are looking at.

Merc - I believe it's just a Megane in drag. I'm not a fan of Mercs, expensive to maintain and the suspension is far too crashy for modern road conditions. (Driven a friends car a few times, he's had about 4 of them)
Golf - Or as I prefer to call them, Flog (as I consider them a bit backwards). Adequate, but bland. I wasn't a fan of the offset steering in the one I had (the steering wheel was 1-1.5 inches over to the right, meaning I was twisted in the seat whilst driving it.) (Company car for 6 months, did about 2k a month)
Civic - I like them. Reliable, not bad on fuel, toys are aplenty and quite a fun drive when pushing on. OK mine is the Type S (2.0 lukewarm version), I'd certainly buy another one, especially with the K20/K24 engine, these are tunable and pretty bulletproof. (Owned for about 18 months)

No soul though. An efficient machine like a decent washing machine.  ;)

'Soul' is a daft concept when applied to people. Using it to make an engines unavoidable flaws(noise, heat, vibration, smell and other noxious emissions) seem desirable characteristics is just marketing.

An inefficient machine is just junk.

Soul / character, call it what you want. Electric cars will never have it.  :)

Perhaps when the bearings on the motors start to fail, and the battery will only charge to 15%. Then it will have character  ;D

My mate has swapped his Toyota today for a new Civic he really looks into vehicles thoroughly before purchasing , he had a test drive a couple of weeks ago and decided to order one on the spot sent me a couple of pics, looks really nice metallic white with black alloys . He owns a couple of classic MGs as well a Midget & a MGB GT V8 . As a daily driver he reckons the Honda is perfect.

I rated the previous Civic even if the suspension and handling was not as good as the generation before it (cost cutting from the Bean Counters - loss of the IRS).

The new one is an awful looking thing, which is a shame as its predecessor had actually moved things on.

Honda are having a quite a lot of build and reliability issues at the moment (displays and infotainment hardware are particularly badly hit but, when you look at the internals its not surprising, as its been over-cheapened)

They seem very popular at the moment loads round here ,I suppose they are quite cheap for a new car , a real shame though if they are having issues with them.

Sounds like they're all shite, then. Apart from the golf, which is boring. Never mind, plenty of time.

Beemer is now looking favourite. Don't know what flavour yet, I'll decide nearer the time.

EDIT: Sorry, I'll be told nearer the time.
Need to get another years warranty on her astra, runs out in December.

Most I see have them fitted these days, they must have stolen them from all of the VWs and Audis.

Nah, that was last decade.  Your average junior saleman now strives for VAG.  And Volkswagon in particular go out of their way to ensure their customers end up in hospital.

Round here, the most common car is Merc.  Probably because half the town work for Petronas AMG Mercedes.

As they dont fit indicators or lights in a professional capacity, they dont understand how they work.

It's a sign of the times. Not just driving, no one gives much of a shit about anything, really. During the last week, one of my neighbours has had a new length of downspout fitted. The old one, being cast iron, was left at the end of the alley.....for the scrap man. Since then, another neighbour has had a new aerial, and another a new radiator. All three items are now at the end of the alley. I was going to tell the neighbours to get their respective'tradesmen' back to shift it, but I've given up. It's not worth the effort/falling out.

The old school, 87 year old lady I've been shopping for is very prim and proper, and doesn't give a shit about falling out with people. When I see her tomorrow, I will light the blue touch paper.......and retire. :)
