Title: hsbc scam message
Post by: raywilb on 07 May 2021, 21:32:37
wife has had a message claiming somebody has tried to obtain a payment from her a/c with instruction to click on a link which appears to be a hsbc fraud team. if anybody gets this message the real banks website has a warning and to delete it.

Ray...our resident scam reporter.  ;D
You'd have to be brain dead to fall for any of these.

It was agreed years ago that any thing they wanted to make contact with you about would be visible once you have logged in, some of the banks & building societies now send an email/text to advise of a message.

Golden rule, only ever log into your account through a portal you trust 100%

HMRC scams, they never text or email you, they dont phone either, they allways write to you via snail mail.

Loads of scams via phone/email asking you to log in via thier link.  Paypal being a common one.  AVOID them all.

my wife had a similar message a few weeks back re her Halifax acc. It shook her up to start with as the amount that was supposedly taken was about what she had in her acc ...just a few hundred quid. She's normally pretty savvy but I think that if I'd not been with her & told it her it more likely to be a scam, I think she might have been tempted to follow the link.
As it was, she logged into her acc via her lap top & could see that all was OK.

Means nothing, number spoofing is very easy.

Some scammers will even ring you and tell you the last transactions you made on your account, because they have accessed it through getting your login details from a hack or bent employee. But they can't shift any money without the code the bank send to your phone, or the details from your card reader, to set up a new payee.
In one scam on tv this week, they didn't manage to get the code, so transferred the cash to an existing payee, one of the victims friends. They then had the cheek to ring the victim, purporting to be from the bank, and told them a payment had been made by error to his friend. They asked him to ring the friend and tell him to transfer the money to a 'safe' account, so they could return it to him from there.
They don't give up easily.

Ive not long since had one from a similar mobile number to my own (obviously spoofed). My NI number has apparently been used for illegal activity and if I didn't press 1 then they would be taking legal action against me...

Naturally I panicked and pressed 1 to connect to a National Insurance Number Investigator... he seemed a lovely chap, especially when I told him he had called the Metropolitan Police Fraud Squad office... And he told me to go F myself... :D :D

The obvious question is why did she even open the email/message, let alone ring the number ???

I had a gentleman with a Indian accent ring our landline yesterday said he was from BT after enquiring how I was  he proceeded to inform me that my phone line was to be disconnected due to a payment being rejected but I could make a payment to him directly ! I informed him to poke his payment advice up his arse , strangely he hung up.

Had an Indian lady phone to try and sell me a new boiler. Asked her if she'd come over from Kolkata to install it.  She also hung up, Strange.  ;D

I love listening to my 4 year old grandson speak with scammers if I get the chance to put him on, he’s far too sharp for the shitty worthless scum. I would love to catch one of the tinkers face to fist.🥊

I've had quite a few calls to update my cover on either all my home appliances or more specifically the washing machine.

I don't even try to take them on ....
