Title: We never had bonfires like this
Post by: STEMO on 08 July 2021, 07:36:54
Eleventh night bonfires getting ready in NI https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57688737

That's a proper feat of engineering.

True but a waste of pallets. Must be a million pounds worth there. Pre pandemic I used to see vans at the roadside and they Bought S/H pallets , no questions asked.

Think how many pallet garden seats have been avoided. There is always a plus.

Same with fireworks, doesn't apply, only applies to cars ::)

I thought all those blue pallets were leased to the companies that use them and you got fined for destroying them?  ???

Those Orangemen (not like Trump, btw) would be papping themselves if they knew that, Jimmy  ;D They set fire to cars, buses and PSNI land rovers, and not one of them has been fined yet.

It isnt the Orangemen who tend to set fire to Police Land Rovers, and other peoples property as a rule.  ;)
Although it isnt completely unheard of for so called Loyalists to do so when they feel particularly angry or under threat.
We always had huge bonfires when I was a kid. I used to spend weeks of the summer holidays up the nearby hills, which were covered in trees, lopping off the biggest branches I could find. Then dragging them half a mile back to the bonfire site. Cant imagine many 10 year olds these days having a razor sharp hatchet as their favourite toy.  ::)
It was a bit of a competitive sport to see which area could build the biggest. The Shankill road usually won.
We used to build a wooden hut with a tunnel extending out from it and then build the bonfire around it.
One day I was sat in the hut under the bonfire, daydreaming, and the local Catholics came along and set fire to the bonfire.
If it wasnt for my Dad looking out the window seeing them do it, and suspecting I might be in there, I may not be sat here typing this.  ;D
To his dying day he claimed they knew I was in there, and that it was attempted murder.
I have my doubts.  ::) ;D

Nice to know that bigotry is alive and well in N. Ireland. To me it's strange that over here, where i live anyway, that no one knows or cares what the religion of your neighbour is, but over there it's a matter of life and death to quite a number of them. I live in a small market town so perhaps i'm sheltered from it. Anyone here had any dealings in England/Wales. Scotland, i would imagine, would have a degree of it.

That bigotry is founded in a long and bitter history, Ronny.

God yes Steve, i realise that. Probably because of my location and have lived there all my life i haven't encountered anything like that. If i'd have spent time living in Belfast i would have a better handle on it.

Its a long standing cultural tradition. When I was a kid it was more about banter & fun, even up to the point of "the other side" setting our bonfire alight.
Then" the troubles" came and it all got serious.  :(

Use to be able to, double my wages by selling the pallets :o

Get a good fork lift driver, and do a deal, load more than you took in,or say at delivery, you want them taking away ..
Don't know what a clean40x48 or euro is now days, but it was £2.50 a 40x48 and £3.00 for a euro.

Now you see why they are worth money.

Bloke on security where I used to work had a scam going along those lines. Pallet supplier thought they'd upset work when the scam was uncovered & the number of pallets required then dropped drastically.
