I have a W reg estate that had the 2.5D engine. The engine has had catastrophic internal damage following oil loss or burn issue. I had always wondered about installing a V8. My understanding was that the engine bay could accommodate as the US version was originally planned around this. Car currently at professional garage belonging to a friend who is able to help with the work, but, would need a plan.
1. Has anyone in the UK attempted this?
2. If so was it accepted by the DVLA?
3. Was there a need to upgrade the diff?
4. Is this a really stupid/dreamer idea and best to replace like for like?

There are pictures on here somewhere of one members car who installed a V8[one of the LS engines I believe]and supercharger into an estate.I don't know what engineering challenges he faced to get it to fit-not a lot of room left under the bonnet once it was in there-but as I understand it he also used the front subframe of the Monaro.

It can be done.
DVLA and insurance both happy.
You need about £12k of bits to get it done. Including:
LS1, gearbox, diff, Monaro front subframe and suspension, Carlton rear subframe and Monaro rear suspension. Uprated fuel pump and about 100 hours of wiring and the same again of fabrication.
Given your donor, I would be inclined to fit the twin turbo straight six diesel from a later BMW 535d as this will be almost a drop in :y

Thank you both for the advice - the Monaro option I would have loved, but, the cost and labour time is preclusion. Will investigate the BMW option - probably more in keeping with reality and I suppose in keeping with the fact that the drive train was BMW in the first place.
