There is a lovely 190D for sale on Autoshite at the moment that I would love to buy, but dont have three grand spare.

15 years ago there was a 190 Cosworth sat outside a house 200 yards from me. It obviously hadnt moved for years. Flat tyres etc.
I made enquiries but was told there was no chance of buying it as it had great sentimental value.
Six months later it was gone.  ::)

All Mercedes rust badly. It's just older ones took longer for it to show.

Mid 90s E-class were the first to show serious problems within a few years.

Recovered loads of E-class where the front suspension mountings had collapsed. That were Mercedes warranty jobs :o .

It's also why so many sported chrome wheel arch trims.

Weren't the first C's basically a tarted-up 190?

I had a 190 for about 5 years, until a couple of years ago. It was full of rust, until I cut it all out and welded new metal in.
If you spend some time on the 190 owners forum you will soon be convinced that unless they lead an extremely cosseted life they rust like a 70,s Vauxhall once they have a few miles / years under their belt.
Particular points to check are the jacking points, around the rear window arperture, inner wings behind the headlights, under the bodykit plastics..........and then everywhere else.

No mine was petrol , the only problem which it had when I bought  it was diff whine which is common on the 190e but I had it rebuilt for around £350 , ran it for 5 years & sold it for a profit.

If it was a 190e, I hope not.  :D
I ran my 190D on chip oil. I kind of miss that, but got tired of all the collecting / storing / filtering, eventually.

I used to have a rusty 1998 C250TD Estate that I ran on veggie oil.  :)

I ran it on Costco's finest veg oil. No hassle and still cheaper than diesel.  :y

Iirc  these can suffer a little with crank walk and that in turn plays havoc with the crank sensor not reading properly.

I quite like the idea of a 240D as a daily beater, if only to slow me down a bit...  :D

The 190 is a bit on the small side for me as they tend not to be particularly adjustable.

Nice to hear , I personally think the 190e was one of the best MB ever made the one my mate is after is well known to the MB owners club it will not be a " bargain buy " if he decides he wants it.
