I really, really like my Omega, and don't plan to change it anytime soon - but I'm feeling a bit fed up with maintenance costs :(
Having already done a long list of jobs, including gearbox change, cambelt kit, suspension work, HBV, and all manner of other things, I now need to do
Tyres, x 4 (£400?)
WIM treatment, as it's eating tyres. (£70, + the same in fuel to get there and back!)
Exhaust, cat back. £240 thereabouts.
Oh, and my insurance is also due.
In a nutshell, I need to find about £1500 in the next couple of weeks, and my time is hugely limited as it is :'(
Anyhoo, moan over - I will get there with it!
-
You do seem to be having a nightmare with this one James :(
I sure hope it stops soon and you can enjoy the car without having to keep spending time and money on it.
I must say, you sure do have alot of patience ;)
-
Once that little lot is done you should have a fair few trouble (and expense) free miles ahead ... so, chin up, nearly there :y

James, just remember that you picked it up at a bargain price and tyres/exhaust are consumables... You can't really hold that against it!!
Anyway... Nearly there!!! :y :y
-
What is annoying, is that I believe the AR35 on there has also seen better days. It's not the smoothest / predicatable autobox I've come across and doesn't seem to know when to change gear.
Was improved when I fixed the knock sensor, but it's still not right.
I won't be putting another autobox in there - it'll be a manual conversion >:(

Totally agree about consumables, not complaining about "the car" in that respect - it just always seems to come around at once ::)

Oh well I need around £250 in body panels and however much to pull out the corner

once you get it running right, then it starts to pay back.
Had my facelift for best part of 3 years now, in the last 18 months all i have done is change the oil (once every 3 months), fuel filter, 1 head lamp bulb, 1 remote battery, and put new anti-freeze in. Thats it!
Last thing to go wrong was the cam sensor, that was about 2 years ago!
Just general maintenance now, steering idler arm and a trip to WIM.
Touch wood, i find Omegas very reliable. Past a 53 plate Pug 206 today, bonnet up, and rac bloke scratching his head! ;D

TBH I have to agree... I've not had the Mig long enough to be at that point yet but my last car, a classic RR was a bit of a money pit to start with but after the first 6 months all it ever cost me was service items. The car was great and I used to pass many newer cars broken down all the time :y :y :y
-
I am actually seriously considering a manual conversion, having seen Pete's guide...
-
With the second hand prices of these cars being at an all time low. When things go wrong, its very affordable to buy another then split the old for spares!
-

But that would then make it into a car you have to drive ::) ::) ::)
In all seriousness James, I'd get the tinker up together and perhaps give the gearbox oil another change in a couple of k and see if it improves it. You don't know how well the gearbox was treated before you put it in or how long it had been standing!!
[edit]OOH... A new star ;D ;D ;D ;D[/edit]

Nice work docker!
James, it's the same with any car you buy...don't let anybody tell you theres is cheaper to run and costs them no money, cars are an expensive necessity end of. All these people that buy a new car every year, just think about the depreciation they suffer! ...and I bet a large percentage of cars on the road are not owned outright.
-
Well done Lazydocker :y
James, ex SWMBO had a 618 'Over that cost about the same amount of money in her last year of her ownership. She lost faith in it and flogged it.
As it happens, my mate bought it. He has not had a single thing go wrong with it since.
That was 6 years and about 50,000 miles ago...
On that basis, let me know if you do want to get rid :)
-

Where you'll find out that your wishbones are shot if it's still on the originals! :D

Yup.... done over 30k on these tires too :o
-
Tough luck James. Like all old used cars, mine took a lot of sorting out when I first got it but it has been pretty good since then. Will need another major round of attention in a year or two so I will probably get rid of it then for something with less miles. (169K, 22K mine in the last 2 years.)
Sounds like it might be time for you to start over with another one? :(

Be interesting to see if the 'lighter' engines cause the bushes to wear as fast.

No chance - no plans to get rid anytime soon!!
I have already devised a long (ish) term exhaust fix (using GM parts from my old 2.5 facelift) and a couple of flexi joiners, meaning I can keep this one going for a bit longer, and replace the tyres/geometry for now, which are the most pressing things.
I WILL get there with it - but once the common things are all sorted, I'm VERY tempted to lob a manual box in there ::)
-
buy mine and transplant the parts (including my LPG kit)
i know some bits wont fit, ie exhaust as its not an estate, but i have 4 very tidy wheels on very recent tyres for a kickoff!

You really are desperate to get rid aren't you ;D
Alas a saloon is no good for me, and yours is too good to break :y
-
tragically mate i am desperate to get rid, people are still seriously put off by the LPG kit not being 100% configured but its not easy to explain to people how the imperfect LPG setup doesnt effect the running of the car on petrol

So rip out the LPG and sell seperately :y

shame, if it had never had LPG fitted you might have had more luck selling it.
Sadly my new hobby of snowboarding means a LPG saloon is no good for me either, boards won't fit!
-
righto james if you want the LPG kit and can leave the car tidy enough without it, its yours :y
-
i know how you feel james, just paid out £480 2day on 2 tyres, 2 rear shocks 2 front shocks, rods, filters and nuts and bolts plus the £50 for the wishbones i got the other week. also ill be paying out to repair the rear diff which is leaking...
£1700 car
£2200 lpg
£300 cam kit and poly V
£60 service
£530 parts
= £4790... so far! (if my maths is right)
dont even want to know how much ive spent on tax fuel and insurance!

It's a crying shame, as it is unlilkely I would be able to find the time to do anything with this, with my other commitments. :'(
I am also considering leaving Omega ownership in favour of either a Veccy 2.2 DT Estate :-X

A sorry tale of how LPG isn't such a good compromise, and how it isn't always as good as everyone keeps blatting on about. Sorry mate.
-
Must admit - I am wary of LPG now.
On a recent trip in my 3.0 I got over 32mpg - my 2.0 on LPG would only do 21. With LPG going up and petrol staying around the same, it's becoming less of an option
-

What about an Omega 2.2DTi???

What about an Omega 2.2DTi???
Would be rare in Estate form with good spec.
Plus I'm on a downer with Omega's, seem to spend more time working on it than I do driving it, ever since I got the thing.

Suppose it's all about finding a good one, always difficult trying to find low mileage diesels. We bought one of our DTi's with 55k on it a number of years ago, now, with 130k on it, apart from consumables as mentioned above (tyres, brakes, oil, filters + exhaust) it's only ever had one thing go wrong (egr valve) and has never left us by the side of the road.
Liked it so much we've got an '03 DTi Elite Estate with leather with 49k on it though...so they do exist ;)
Your V6 is still a beauty mate, often think it would be nice to have a big V6 which suits the car much better. Still maintain there is no bigger, more comfortable, classier car for the money, despite your financial outlay :y
-
Oh well at least you don't have to find £600 to £700 to get your car repaired. (forget insurance)
Excess 425
lost bonus year 1 360
lost bonus year 2 200
ect

the majority of the time its a fantastic invesment, sadly in my case... it's not :(
still a fantastic petrol car though

I just can't believe how unlucky you've been Danny. Having fitted the, much rated, Motogas kit I can safely say it was the best thing I ever did. I'm only really about 5000 miles from being in profit, with a big motor and all the go of a V6 :y :y :y
I just hope you manage to get a good price for it when you do manage to sell it

tragically i wont, its a case of cutting my losses but its a lose-lose situation now, i have no choice but to lose money on it, (car owes me around £4000 since having the kit put on, 4 new tyres, exhaust :() but i cant seem to get the price right, if its a tad too dear, or even the right ballpark price, it doesnt get enough interest, if its cheap enough, people automatically get scared off!
i've had a lot of bad luck over the years in many a tiny insignificant situations, only a tiny amount of good fortune, but this car seemed to just be a really bad investment
the advert will expire in 11 days or so, at which point i will put it up for auction, with a reserve, and even if it doesnt meet reserve, i may just second-chance the closest bidder
i really want it to go to forum members though who are open to the help of resident experts who just might be able to get the LPG running properly or even strip it out nicely and use the car without, cos it runs so well on petrol

Danny. When I looked at your car the first thing that came to mind was 'Bet the cam cover gaskets would be a swine with all that pipework'. Now I know what it's all about, but it looks quite scary to a potential owner.
