Sweet as the Beastie is the top end could be a "little quieter" so she's having the whole lot replaced with new whether she needs it or not!
Meantime i love 'Tinas but Mk3's are silly money so i'm picking this up on Saturday. Needless to say machine polish full valet etc. What's the best oil for these now, GTX, Duckhams?
-
when i had mine a few yrs back m8 i would only use the duckhams oil and nowt else and my dad was the same never had any probs only one thing m8 and i hope u dont mind me saying loose the naff wheels

I'd try adjusting the 'tappets' (0.010" + 0.008"???) first before I replaced everthing. The Pinto is a piece of cake to work on.
I think there's still 1600 Pinto head in my Dad's garage. ;D

It must be in the name ;D ;D ......I agree. They're more suited to a Scimitar. :y It needs it original pressed steel wheels back on. ;)

Nice choice. I never did get to find out what the difference was between mk4 and mk5.
Friend of mine had a mk3 2 litre GXL white with a black vinyl roof.
It was M reg 1973.quick car for it's day. :y :y
-
OH DEAR!!!! I love the Wolfies, maybe better suited to a Mk1 Eccy & the originals looked good with the chrome inserts, ( i'm 45 yrs young so remember my old Fords) but i think they're cheesey retro :D!!
Anyway, fingers crossed she's as good as she looks. Any recommendations for classic ins. quotes? Need to get her covered this week to drive home Saturday...Machine polish & valet Sunday. Will post a couple of piccies when done. :y

Mk5 was no more than a Mk4 facelift really. Bigger bumpers/lights, few interior changes but you can't swap front wings due to indicator lens shape. :y

Oh yes,cam shaft on these use to rattle due to oil ways blocking up on the feed..
Press cars had roller followers that couldnt dig in to the case hardened cam shaft, you might be able to still get them
We also use to put a couple of pints of diesel fuel into the oil and let the engine idle for about 30 mins before an oil change, this kept the oil ways clear of the gunk that blocks up the camshaft oil pipe.
I got over 120.000 miles out of a 2 litre capri with a pinto engine
then the body rotted off it
-
next door neighbour had 1 of those when he died his daughter left it in the garage to rot....scrap man gave her £20 to take it away 5years ago took him 3 hrs to get it outa the garage....much prefered the earlier cortinas though

A work friend of mine has two of these one white and the other green and i think he will be selling the white one next year when the green one is ready to come out on the road. The white one is just so nice to look at and drive plus when he's out in the car it does get a lot of looks , so if any one wants a nice MK3 then i would say this MK3 is one of the best out there :)

Take the oil spray bar off, get an old fashioned squirty oil can, fill it with petrol & get squirting...flushes any muck out. When all holes clear, refit...done!!!!!!!!!!! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

I think the MK1 Lotus Cortina was built on the same production line as the original Elan.
MK2 went along the Ford production line. And was called Cortina Lotus.Correct me if i am wrong.
-
.....
Windscreen rake is different too
Windsreen rake being different? I wouldn't thinks so. :-/
I do know that a Cortina III estate car is taller in the body than a saloon, so that would make the estate & saloon screens different from each other ie an estate's is deeper from the scuttle to the roof.
I learnt this from a neighbour years ago who bought a saloon's front door for his estate. They both looked identical to each other, and the saloon door did fit to estate. It was just as he closed the door when he'd finished! :-? There was a 2" gap between the top of the window frame and the roof line. ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Driven many a mile in the estate version, nice car, now if I get to Bishop Auckland before you!!!!!!!!!!!! :y

Ooh! :-* Look at all the room in that engine bay! Crying out for a Zetec / C20XE / Lotus twin cam / Cossie YB for some proper live axle sideways roundabout action. :D
I'll go and wash my mouth out with soapy water... :(

At the end of (what we laughingly called) last summer I stopped on my way home from work, to offer a helping hand to a broken down Lotus Elan + 2 In the snug engine bay sat a Zetec complete with a couple of side drought Webbers. Fortuantely he didn't need any help!

My dad had the Mk4 Estate... used to eat Void Bushes!
Mine, a Mk5 was thrashed for 96K and never missed a beat, company car regularly serviced, do seem to remember a choke problem? auto choke? but that was about all.
And it used to do a lot of towing of works trailers. ;D ;D ;D
-
Yes - void bushes were a pain, Used to last 3 months if you did the bolts up before letting it off the jacks.
Miggy wishbone bushes are no better.

First car I bought was a 1600 Mk4. Remember doing the HG in due to none of the gauges working when it sprung a leak and repairing it in the back street one night after work.
Personally I prefer the look of the Mk3, the 4s and 5s never did it for me but good luck to you Guy I'm sure your unique approach to car washing will have it looking better than the day it rolled out of the dealers.

Hi K.W. Love modding/drifting but hope this one's straight enough to leave as is.
VXLV6 & Bandit 127, stilll got a void bush puller but please no, never again!!!!!!!!!
Mike f. Fitted with twin choke so hoping manual choke conversion. One of my MK3's was an M reg 2000E. Lovely car but the autochoke was pants as was the auto borg warner slush box which lost a third of the power. A good 1600 manual would see it off the line yet a good 2.0 manual would still hold it's own today. :y

I just like the idea of a classic car with a modern lump under the hood. Classics are much more appealing to the eye than any modern car, IMHO, but they're always a bit dull to drive in comparison to modern cars. Just wondering if I can have the best of both worlds.

Hi John. I'm a bit sad really as 'Tinas are my bezzy motors, can't help it i just love 'em! Had 'em all over the years but early MK3's with the disappearing dash are my thing. If i could get one in this cond for the money i'd bite the sellers hand off. Memories of Boogie with Stu blasting through Clarion speakers on the back shelf & a seperate graphic stuffed were the ashtray was. 21 yrs old, white L reg 1600L (X-Flow), Car's dead now but music reminds me! 8-) :y

Careful mate we're turning into the forums boring old farts. ;D ;D
break em if it makes you feel good it's all that matters.
Never had the disappearing dash but my Mk4 had a disappearing chassis when it cracked over the back axle and the boot dropped.

Awesome, I love 'tinas. Its just crying out for a YB, especially in that beige!
Still regretting selling my mk3 capri last year- had a 3.1 essex and multi-leaf springs! ;D

Tried to find a nice Monza GSE but they just don't exist anymore :'(

From 1991 to 1994 I owned a 1981 MkV Cortina 2.3 Ghia V6 manual. One of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. Only fault was at 65-70mph on motorway I was always itching for a fifth gear. Last saw it in about 96/97 but imagine it has now gone to great scrapyard in the sky :(
-
takes me back to my cab days, always confused me why they call the ohc lump a pinto, im pretty sure that the rare 2.1 version was the only one that was a true pinto, anyhow good old duckhams done me proud & NGK or BOSCH spark plugs, champions used to oil up to easy when the valve oil stems used to ride up the valve or go brittle, dont forget the solid void arm bushes on the rear to stop the pull away wiggle ;)oh happy days :'(
-
Just caught up with this thread but just got to comment about the beloved Cortina! ::) ::)
I was lucky enough to have driven the Mk1 and Mk2 whilst learning to drive, then subsequently have a brand new Mk3, MkIV and MkV estates (all 1600 L's) as company cars. Absolutely wonderful to drive and they would take loads not only very large but so heavy that they would drop the suspension to virtually touching the top of the rear tyres!! :o :o :-* :-*
They were extremely easy to work on and very realiable work horses, with only a MkIV letting me down with an alternator failing as I was driving just north of Winchester. :'( :'(
In my collection of desirable cars I would certainly add a Mk2 Lotus Cortina Saloon, a 1600E Mk2 Saloon and a 2.0 GL MkV Estate. :-* :-* :-* :y

You are partially right Andy ;), but it was Ford not the enthusiats who did not class their "80 Cortina" as a MkV. However, at the time and since Ford garage personnel that I dealt with regularly all referred to this Cortina as a MkV, as indeed did us customers and drivers at the time! :y
You may be interested in the following web site:
http://www.channel4.com/4car/ft/feature/retrospective/1687/1
and particularly the following short article about the MKIV / V:
"Ford Cortina Mk5 1980-82 Number sold 1,131,850 (inc Mk4)
Officially there is no such thing as the Mk5. Ford referred to the latest-generation Cortina as the '80 in its advertisements, but hard-core Cortina fans insist the revised model qualifies as a separate mark. It didn't look that different, although it did have a new slatted grille, larger tail-lights and deeper glass areas. Inside, face-level vents were fitted in the centre of the dashboard which meant the radio had to be repositioned - wow! The V6 and 2.0-litre engines were revised and the S model was dropped. By 1982 everyone knew that the Sierra - a Cortina wearing a jelly-mould - was on its way, so Ford shored up sales with a Crusader special edition. This had sports wheels, adjustable driver's mirror, passenger door mirror, locking petrol cap, Ghia seats, velour trim, head restraints, radio, clock and two-speed wipers. Priced to sell, it did indeed sell out, and those last 30,000 models contributed to a grand total of 4,279,079 Cortinas produced over 20 years."
A great car and a pure pleasure to drive, with me certainly regularly achieving 100+mph out of my MkV 1.6L Estate!! 8-) 8-)
I would certainly love a good example of one to run around in now! :-* :-* :-* :y
-
Ins. starts @ 12noon sat. £103 tpft with my points so not bad. I'd love another Mk3 (one day) & had Mk1's 2's when i was a young'un but this'll do for a weekend toy. :D

Often, got done for speeding very late at night on the A1, I was caught at 90mph but had slowed down by then to reach for some chewing gum :) Not another car on the road, never saw the police car till the blues came on, had seen lights though, he said he had been parked up and with such little traffic I stood out ::) ::) ::) I leaned to be more careful in the dark after that. ;D

They obviously paid attention whilst learning their trade in the stealthy nicking classes then!!
How does the Tom and Jerry cartoon dog say it again??

Only ever been caught times over many years, this one, once on the A1 in a truck when they were restricted to 40mph and, thirdly when the 50mph blanket speed limit was on, all when I was young. ::) ::) ::) and all fair cops............

I should've made myself clearer. The Tina's fine it's the MV6 (Beastie) that's having the top end rebuild. Not noisy by any means, still sweet but could be a tad quieter so is being done regardless. Everything else is "perfick" so why not? 8-)

BBZZZZZZZZZZZZZRRRRRR! tinker! :y ;D :o

Cheers Andy.Despite being fitted with a twin choke Webber the auto choke sticks a little so will try a tinker or look for a manual conversion. Slight clutch judder on pull away but otherwise peachy. New front wings/valance, outer sills, (checked the inners) & new rear wheel arches. Void bushes feel nice & tight. Looks better in the flesh than the ebay listing i posted. She's a baby & i'm a sentimental old nostalgic!!!!!!!! 8-)

Can you post some pics for us? The original link is broken, for me at least.
There's some Mk2 GT DNA (http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/car_info_ford_cortina_gt_mk2.htm) in my MV6. Had lots of Mk2, 3 and 4s, but the Mk2 GT is my favourite.
(Here's another one - shame about the wheels).
