One of our neighbours has traded her old Ka in & bought a new Corsa, asked me what I thought of it, I really liked it a vast improvement on earlier models I really thought it was an Astra till I saw the badge on the boot, cracking little car

Best selling car in the UK

I'm not surprised really spacious inside, lovely metallic blue colour very smart indeed.

Yes, it is quite amazing to me that the Corsa like so many cars today, has grown in dimension and street presence since the first of that model.
When I see the old Carlton, Granada, a Cortina, or Escort, like the original old mini, they seem so small and old fashioned compared to todays sleek examples. Of course even the tyre sizes they used, with cross ply in many cases, have ballooned! ;D ;D ;)

In common with the general public in 2022.
Compare the average height, weight, and general girth of the working class man during WW1 more than 100 years ago, with that of the average man today.
Fat bastards are everywhere these days... ::) ::) :D

A new Fiesta is very slightly bigger than an Austin Maxi ..... ::)

...and the Maxi would have been seen as a ' 'sizable and spacious family saloon'

Now that is all very true! ;D :y
Like doorways and ceilings in 400 year old houses have grown in relationship with the contemporary person, so have cars grown to meet the new demands of us modern, larger, people ;)
-
Actually, small cars have grown to improve crash protection and allow airbags to function safely, especially side/window/head protection bags.
SUVs and the like only exist because marketing wank tells us that we need/want them.
People don't buy traditional mid size cars any more because many manufacturers don't produce them, especially for the UK market.
Go somewhere sensible, like Spain, and you can buy saloon and/or estate versions of affordable/sensible cars.

My ceilings are 10 foot high (1890 house) most are 8 foot or less these days
and new houses are shoeboxes

Yes Dave, I suppose in a mansion you do have them as well ;D ;D ;D ;)
Seriously I have always wondered if houses in the Victorian and Edwardian eras were designed with high ceilings to allow for the smoke from chimneys and people using tobacco products could gather high above their heads! :o :o
It certainly meant they had to keep their coal fires going, or freeze to death! ;D ;D ;)
-
I think the big door high ceiling thing is primarily a demonstration of wealth and status, rather than the size of people.
Stately homes have huge doors and windows whilst a hovel may have small doors and windows, probably to keep the heat in.

Probably originally owned by a member of the 'up and coming Victorian middle class'
Doctor, factory owner, solicitor. Something like that. :)

and windows where taxed
glass was very expensive ,especially large glass sections
hence Georgian bar windows and bullseye glass

If its a brand new one, its a horrid piece of shit to drive. Its really, really good at swapping ends.
But it has all the electronic distractions that the millenials love, and who cars what its like as a car.
Everytime the local hire company drops off a car and I look out the window and see its a Corsa, my heart sinks :(

The old girl has had a bump in it already, big dent in the n/s front wing when I walked past it this morning, I've never driven a Corsa but did drive a Nova a few times that was awful.

Nova was a superb car to thrash around in. What it lacked in power, it would make up for in the corners, much to the annoyance of much quicker cars!
The Vauxhall 208, however, handles like, errr, a small Pug ;D. Actually, it has many of the handling traits of the excellent Pug 205 GTi, but without the roadholding...

I'm guessing that it drives and handles just fine ...... for those of us that don't drive like hooligans. ;) ;D

So that excludes you as well, then, Mr YZ ;D
In fairness, all the ones I've driven have been hire cars, and thus have to be constantly thrashed to within an inch of their lives.

Strange how different people view cars , I honestly think that the Nova is probably the worst car that I've ever driven extremely uncomfortable for even a short journey.

I've actually got a "metal puller" so might have a word with her it doesn't look like any paint damage just a simple dent.

I had one for 9 years, was a great little car, only a 1.2 but with the front and rear antiroll bars fitted was quite go-kart like and with the addition of a few 1.3 bits I had lying around quite nippy (exdhaust manifold and front pipe, 2E3 carb and inlet, 1.4 cam). Never let me down, and I did tens of thousands of miles in it. Far FAR superior to the Fiesta it replaced

Passed the old girl when I was walking the dog this morning, got chatting and mentioned the dent she was quite upset & fearful what her son would say as he is a bit of a prick ( her words) I told her I'd pop round and see if I could sort it out, the puller worked a treat + a bit of Tcut removed the small scratch ,she had just touched a post in Sainsbury's car park when backing out, she popped round this afternoon with a pack of beers for me , my good deed for the day..🍺🍺🍺

Read a report about the new corsa yesterday. From what it said, it's not a patch, equipment or cabin layout wise, to it's sister car the Peugeot, and it doesn't get anywhere near the fiesta as a drivers car.
Their take on it outselling the fiesta was that Ford, being clever buggers, put all the chips they had for manufacturing into the transit (which, btw, outsold the corsa and fiesta added together) because they make a bigger profit on the van. Same(ish) selling price as the fiesta, but cost less to produce.

Doesn't align with the facts I have, the Transit is not a big profit item (and one of the reasosn it was pulled from SOuthampton was to improve margins), Ford would be opushing the chips at the Focus upwards to get profit :y
The issue the Fiesta has is that its not cheap, even a base model Trend is 17K now!
The Corsa is about £1500 cheaper
