Post by: willyboy on 08 September 2008, 23:13:04
Being of the older gen & used to cleaning greasy /oily BSA  motor bikes  using "GUNK" in my day... any tips on what to use got two engines (in car) to clean up V6 isnt too bad but my 2.0 CD is well "mucky" Is Gunk still the stuff?
I have a jet wash always reluctant to use it in case wet the electrics etc ..so any tips as best way coz seen some pics of some of your engines posted look brill .. plus need cleaning up so easier to work on shortly ... :y

Me too, older type person.
If you protect the leccy bits you wont have a problem, but that takes time and effort.
Old carrier bags are ideal for wrapping around the various modules and leccy bits,
but dont use the dirt blaster as this can push a crank seal out of position.
I suggest anything that can be removed is removed and cleaned, or else sufer Valetors syndrome.

I used to use Gunk but never used a Jet wash on a modern engine, too many electircs, last used 4 years ago on a Ford Prefect, coverd the bits with plastic, was simple with older cars, put the car on the road so as not to dirty my drive ::)

I used pressure washer on my 4 pot veecy too... worked a treat till I POOed my pants going to a mates... Glanced down at the dash, and the temp was right into the red  :( Wacked it into Neutral, and Switched engine straight off - Going 50mph at the time too!  ;D) Anyway, pulled over and opened the bonnet, and grabbed the coolant pipes - they felt fine!

Turned out, it was just water in the temp sender! But my god... thought it was a gonner!  ;D

Must admit, I did spray EVERYWHERE with the pressure washer (was washing under bonnet for a good 15 mins!)  :D

Anyway, back on topic, I used traffic film remover (got a big 25L drum of it, so if you want some, I can take it to the meet!)

Dont have a fax machine, but I can send it through email as an attachment!  :y

If you want a clean engine bay, bob down to mine, and you can use the air line and spary gun to clean it (which is what did most of the cleaning on mine, and it uses VERY little water so dont need to cover electrics etc!)  ;)
