Post by: JonArgraig on 08 September 2008, 20:18:38
If you ever get the chance - Llandudno - Great Orme -

Try it at night, as it will be quite, or on a week day, and yes it's a one way road for the most

The best driving road in the world is the one that goes from work to home. I never fail to feel elated once I'm on it.  :)

Try the coast road from Sorrento to Salerno - it's like a fairground ride.

Or rather, don't.  It would be a great test of driving skill if it wasn't for the other drivers.  I never got above 3rd gear for 2 weeks.

Two roads spring to mind for me

Stelvio Pass - This should be on any serious drivers list of roads to drive 'energeticaly' before you die (think I scared the crap out of Laidback66 on here a few times !)

More localay

B4067 from Market Harborough to Melton Mowbray, very twisty and hilly in places and if you know it well then its a GREAT road (listed as a top one by bikers to!)

Have great memories of driving the Great Orme competitely in a Cooper S (years ago) on special stage rallies.

One time a fellow competitor "crashed" into the retaining wall without going over and limped to the end of the stage in his identical car. My radiator sprang a leak and we swapped them over in double quick time.

Now I settle for more or less any road in Andalucia. It is said that if Andalucia was a country then it would be the second most mountaineous in Europe! Out of the skiing season the road from Granada to and past the ski resort to something like 2,750 metres takes some beating. There are always Imprezas etc being put through their paces!.

My favourite is the non toll road from south of the millau bridge to beziers, a dual carriageway but stunning bends and climbs. And if I'm on it it means I'm not at work.

Ahh .. the A75, N9, D9 ... that was a fun road I agree... but some of the less well known roads like the D110 Peyreleau - Millau were more fun ... but not with a truck or a pikey wagon !!!!!

 :D :D :D :D :D

Interesting one, pretty fast with a good climb to. Drive this one every year when we go to Fairford

A361 between Junction 27 M5 and Barnstable

Also the road from Monmouth down to the Coldra at newport - although watch out for the Talivan :D

West of Worcester A44 to Aberystwyth is nice as is A443 and A4103

Cotswolds try A435 from Crickley Hill to Cirencester

Bath to Stratford on Avon via A46, the section out of Bath over the Cotswolds is lovely, after Cheltenham nice run down to Winchcombe and through to Broadway, good biking road!

A30 Devon & Cornwall is scenic but hard work towing.

A39 can produce a good drive.

A3083 B3293 and joining lanes in the Lizard has very good scenery, some fast straights, and some good corners. The lanes and small roads near the sea and the rivers are scenic but slow

Not bad but hilly, quite nice

Fast A40 & A449 but the Ross Monmouth section is prettier

Col-du-Turini, just outside monte carlo  :y :y

26 miles of twisty winding road that takes you up 5000ft above sea level....

In a RHD car it gives great views on the way up as you are right by the side of the road/cliff face....

Sister in law was as sick as a dog when we went up there this year in the Miggy, i wasn't blatting it either  ;D ;D ;D

snake pass  , minus snow or pikey wagons...

A4074 oxford to Henley and thru to Maidenhead/pinkney's green

has some cool bits ... although traffic can be an arse

A470 From Llandudno Junction down past llanrwst to betws...

4086/498 capel curig to tremadoc

the A5 itself from Bethesda to Llangollen used to be a fave of mine...

for a while in the early 90's i commuted from Bangor to high Wycombe....
got to know it VERY well....

also the 497 from Porthmadog to Nefyn...   ... and down the coast from Nefyn  the B4417 and some of that area is pure enjoyment...  although less so in summer when it's tourist season...

the A399 South Molton to Ilfracombe is good....

as is the A39 north devon coast road from Barnstaple heading west to Bude,
and the A39 again from Blackmoor gate to Porlock....

....

Problem with that one is you need to be at very illegal speeds before it gets fun and last time I went that way there were a few GATSOs. Still fun outdragging the WPWs up the hills though. [smiley=evil.gif]

The roads this weekend were perfect for the Westfield. Perhaps a little tight for an Omega but flowing from one corner to the next, a good mixture of sweeping bends where you can pile on the lateral "G", and tight hairpins that you can exit in 2nd with the tail hanging out. All without exceeding the speed limit. Much. :-X

Very little traffic, and what traffic you did meet were courteous enough to see you were "on a flyer" and pull over. Can't see that ever happening down south.

Entwood is right as well. Practically any French "D" road is just as good.

Kevin
