If I cut my privet hedge right back to the stems and branches will it regenerate and become a nice green hedge again? ???
I know if you cut leylandii type hedges back too much they don't grow back and look like a horrible mess. ::)
Laurel hedges on the other hand are very forgiving and will grow back quickly after a severe hair cut. :y
What about privet? :-\

I sometimes help a lady friend of mine trim her bush.

Yes , privet hedge will grow back if you butcher it
if you want it to grow back faster then water and feed it ;)
I've trimmed many a bush in my time :P

It must have been terrible back in your day M'lud having to fight your way through impenetrable jungle to find the little man in his canoe? :)
I bet you felt quite heroic when you got there, like Stanley finding Livingston in deepest darkest Africa! :D

Probably best done in the winter I'd imagine, so it grows back strongly in the spring? ???

Sounds about right.
I much prefer the way women look after themselves in 2022.

Both laurel and privet are relatively slow-growing. So cut in back harshly by all means but you won't have much privacy for quite some time. :y
