Title: Blackouts
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 08 December 2022, 19:59:54
THere's been predictions that Britain will run out of electricity at times this winter for various reasons.  :-\

This morning I got up and thought Effing hell it's cold, didn't think too much about it as it was cold last night and jumped in the shower only to find the water was lukewarm!  :o  >:(

After a very brief shower, I checked the central heating controller to find that there had been a power cut just when the heating and water were due to come on.  ::)

So that's the first outage. Anyone else had a power cut?  ???

Blackouts
Kids dying from Strep A
Lots of scarlet fever and chickenpox in schools round here
A&E's crowded 24 hours a day with 12 hour waits
Strikes by.....everyone, so no post, no trains, no ambulances, etc.
People freezing in their homes

Apart from these things, Christmas should be great  :y

Did you see that Switzerland are considering bringing in restrictions on charging electric cars to save energy?  ;D

True story btw!  :)

I was thinking about going away somewhere warm and sunny for the Christmas week, but now apparently Border Farce staff are on strike which will cause travel chaos especially on the return flight.  :-\

So looks like I'll stay and shiver like everyone else....  ::)

Just had a chat with the bearded jolly who delivered our heating oil.

It's all going up again in January, he smiled. :)

I gave him a bottle of scotch because I am so nice.

He smiled some more. :)

The boiler is very prone to not working when the weather gets cold. Works perfectly in 40C heat.... :-X :-\

Brent Crude oil is currently trading at $77.51 a barrel, down from it's high of $136.84 in March, so I'd query that if they do hike the cost of your heating oil.

I guess they have you over a barrel though....  :-\     Pun intended!  ;D

Likewise wholesale natural gas is cheaper now than it was in the summer, and I'd have thought this would start to translate to cheaper bills soon..... But...  ::)

It keeps trying to come on, which I'm guessing is not good for the boiler and the like. Quick half a second flash and off again  ;D

Taking the knee before your opponents seems kinda submissive to me and I propose that they perform an English style Haka instead to intimidate the Frogs!  :y

Maybe an aggressive Morris dance?  :)

It is.

Imagine if Tyson Fury dropped to his knees just before the start of the fight.

They don't even know why they do it now. Linked to the armed robber George Floyd probably. :-\

I heard on the tellybox this morning that wind has produced 2% of our electricity this week.
When you consider the amount of taxpayer money it has had in subsidies its a scandal.

Wind power is virtually useless, too spasmodic.
Solar power is no good as when you need it most in cold winter weather there is no sign of the sun.
We are an island surrounded by sea so wave and tidal power is the way to go but no numbnut politician is interested.
I really fear for the future and am seriously considering moving to The Gambia where freezing to death is not an option.

Power cuts , water outages ,terrible drivers ,poor street lighting, corrupt police ,toll stops/road blocks  "10 dalasi please ,nice to be nice"
so, just like the UK  ;D

only one set of traffic lights to negotiate , not that any of the locals know how to use them  :D
the several £5 road building taxes i've paid don't seem to have done much good ,so also much like the UK ,though UK road tax is £360  :(

have you visited Banjul meat and fish markets ?  :-X

We have been going to The Gambia for over 20 years and 6 years ago bought a compound and built a couple of houses, one for adopted Gambian family and one for us for less than the price of a garage here in the South of England.
We have lived there from January to April for the last 4 years and absolutely love it.
Power cuts are no problem as we have a generator and all cooking is done with bottled gas or charcoal.
We also have a bore hole so no water problem.
I love the Gambian driving, just bully your way through or use the local bush taxis, great fun.
Everything is so cheap as we use the local markets, even the bribes are cheap so you can live like a millionaire on a UK pension.
We have used the Serekunda markets which are closer to us with all the sights and smells they have.
Wall to wall sunshine and virtually zero humidity, absolutely perfect.
The only downside is the 5am mosque call but you get used to it fairly quickly.
