I turned my central heating on 1st December and set the thermostat at 14 degrees to see if it was tolerable.
I'm surprised that it's still at 14 and it's OK...ish. I wear layers and thermals, and if I get chilly I give the room a quick blast with a 2.5Kw fan heater apparently costing about 14.5p for a 10 minute blast. I have an electric blanket on my bed and two duvets, and it's lush getting in a nice hot bed! :y
I'm not in the heat or eat category, but I refuse to spend thousands ££££ on heating this winter which may be a tad eccentric..... ::)
It will however be interesting to see what my bill is at the end of the month! :y
What are you doing? :)
-
Mine is set at 20°, and the 33kW boiler has trouble keeping the house hot all day. Oh, and I leave it on all night. ;D
-
But I never made any schoolboy errors ;D
-
I know people, friends as well as family, who in the past have heated single rooms or let the house get cold to save on fuel bills. Unless you have to do it, I wouldn't. When I went to get a leather jacket from dads wardrobe upstairs, it was green with mould. He slept downstairs after he lost his leg and upstairs was soaking wet with the paper peeling off the walls. If you own your property, you're doing it no favours by letting it get cold and damp.
-
My house is south-ish facing and on sunny days gets nice and warm. :)
Even on the last couple of days when it's been freezing out but very sunny, I've opened the windows to ventilate so I'm not worried about mould. :y
-
I suppose that we are fortunate that we can afford to use the heating when we need it. Some who are less able to are those i feel most sorry for. Must admit that we turn it off at 10pm and don the thick bath robes. :D If it gets really cold then it will stay on all night. Cavity wall and thick loft insulation helps to hold the heat in.

Insulation ::)
No wonder it's so cold out
you're keeping all that warmth to yourself if you insulate :D
-
I've done away with having it come on every morning before I get up. It always used to wake me up early anyway and, surprisingly, I don't miss it at all, it's just a little nippy when getting out of the shower but bearable.
So it's currently on from whenever mrs. KW gets too cold during the day until about 9 pm.
Thermostat keeps creeping up due to the heat pixie, but I set the boiler flow temperature so it can't use too much energy anyway. ;D I wonder if TheBoy could recommend a locking device to fix that?
Oh, and the log burner is getting much more use this year. That keeps the downstairs toasty in the evenings and so far all the wood has been free.
-
The thermostat used to be set at 19 degrees now down to 17, house still nice & warm throughout, in the evening when we are in the lounge the temperature hovers between 19-21 degrees , the boiler is on timer from 07.00-09.00 AM & 17.00-21.00 PM . Next bill is due in January so will be interesting to see, glad that we moved to a newer & better insulated house in 2018 , we also.have an electric blanket first time for 5 years which is very comfortable.🔥

You guys are lucky!! Since arriving back from Mallorca on Wednesday night late and a horrendous 2 fllights to Glasgow via Bristol then 2 buses from Glasgow to Aviemore (no trains) and no heating whatsoever in one of the buses I got home to find no water. I have bottled gas and electric convection heaters as backup. It has been around -10 since I got here. Saturday morning and still no water and of course no c/h. Fixed three burst pipes so far. I have managed to get water to the sink and that is as far as I have got. The portable electric heater I have to go under sink etc broke down last night as well. I just hope my gas boiler is ok. Bloody weather!!! Grrrr >:( >:(

I use one of those programmable thermostats the Shitfix used to sell 20yrs ago, so the heating timer (and water) is set to 24/7, and the programmable roomstat varies between 14C overnight, 17C during weekdays if she's working at home (I override it down to 14C if she's not) and up to 19C in evening
If we have her dad over, it gets overriden to about 25C, then all the windows and doors opened when he leaves.

I’m probably in a minority here judging by previous posts but we have ours set to 22C during the day as I’m home, dropping to 16C during the night. Mrs YZ goes to work at 6.15am so the heating cuts in at 5.15am and goes to the lower setting at 11pm.
I always wear shorts and T shirt when at home and I’m not wrapping up in extra layers when I don’t need to. We do obviously turn the heating down a bit if we are both going out but we turn it back up again from our phones on the way home. Hmm, I wonder why our house is the only one in the cul-de-sac with no snow on the roof. ::)
Having said that, I’ve just got home and it’s bloody hot in here. ;D

With reference to being the only one with no snow on the roof: If you can afford it, flaunt it. ;D

Either that, or my loft insulation isn’t as good as I thought. ;D

:y I’m certainly old enough to remember ice on the inside of windows as my parents only form of heating was a Rayburn in the kitchen and a gas fire in the sitting room (in front of the unused open fireplace). It was many, many years later that they had central heating put in. As my parents always closed doors to keep the heat in the room, the rest of the house was like a fridge. ::)

Yep....back in the day one warm room with a roaring open fire and the rest ice cold was common.
.....and they even survived without pronouns and a smartphone. :)

My parents & grandparents used to have paraffin heaters in the sixties, I'd quite often be sent to the local hardware store to get a couple of gallons of the horrible smelling liquid , looking back they were bloody dangerous things, do people still use them ?

They still sell them but I don’t know anyone that uses one, apart from in a greenhouse maybe. We must have been well posh, the Pink Paraffin lady used to deliver ours. :y ;D

Agreed...... I believe that Skruntie hails from Rotherham, and I always thought that people from the north didn't have enough brass to rub two lard butties together. ::)

21c in my living room, turn it off when out and over night. Elecy panel heater in living room and bedroom, elecy under floor in kitchen and on suite, both under floors on timers and thermostats. Bedroom gets turned on a couple of hours before bedtime to take the chill off, had ice on the inside of outer sash window panels but inner secondary was clear. Heater in bed room has a low temp cut in at 12c and it came on the other night but I was toasty under my 6000 tog duvet.

Although have a new boiler, the piping in our old house bangs like Angie Rayner when clicking on, so leaving it on the thermostat is not an option if we want to sleep :( So, switch on and off manually when required.
Our Rayburn water tank sprang a leak and became unusable. Can't get anyone to repair/replace. Plenty will sell me a new one, but won't install it and remove the old one
Log burner is great :y

I mentioned 'Jack Frost' to my 33 yr old "little girl recently" ..... she hadn't a clue what I meant, & was gob smacked when I explained it. There again though, she can't believe that her Dad used to have to use an outside toilet as a kid .... she & her bother had the choice of 3 inside toilets!

My Nan had an outside toilet at her cottage, with corrugated tin roof. She used to leave a couple of burning candles in there during the cold dark spells, mainly for light but also to stop the freezing toilet seat from ripping the skin off your arse. ;D

Some interesting replies .
I've just fitted a smart thermostat onto our oil boiler which gives much more control to our CH system.
One of the unfortunate side effects of my wife's recent stroke is that her left side always "feels " cold although her body is at an equal temp. It's just an issue with her brain's calibration of the skin temp. sensors .
The smart system allows her to turn on /increase /decrease /switch off the CH system wherever she is in the house .
It's been particularly cold here recently , coldest for 11 years , so both our multi fuel stoves have been roaring recently but normally one is sufficient
I'm burning seasoned oak that I cut and split last year along with smokeless nuggets . Real dirty coal is unobtainable here so I was concerned that the nuggets would be a waste of money but have been pleasantly surprised with their heat and burn time .
We are also using some good thermal underwear after discarding other cheaper useless items that were bought in haste ,and warm woolen throws .
Sheilagh got some all over head to toe blankety thingy with a hood but I drew the line at that .........
Generally the thermostat hovers between 19-22 but due to the use of the stoves it's on and off during the day depending how Sheilagh feels and is switched off at night as the residual heat from the stoves keep the house warm until morning.
The one great advantage is that all our heating fuels , timber, coal and oil are paid upfront so no nasty surprise bills drop through the mail.
I really feel sympathy for those that do not have that advantage .
Real cold is a miserable thing to have to endure and I'm extremely grateful that we can avoid it .
-
Thermal undies are great and really make a difference. :y
'Cos I'm a cheapskate, mine cost about £11 from Ebay and are quite effective, but I take Don's point that a quality set would be even better. Marks & Sparks? ???
You gets what you pay for. :)

We have a smart thermostat and as you say, it gives you far more control over the heating/hot water from anywhere. We have the Hive system (the choice was either Hive or Nest and Nest looked more complicated :)) The Hive system is a very easy system to use and can be controlled from either the thermostat, voice commands or a smart phone, so you can turn the heating down when you are out and turn it back up before you get home. :y You can also add smart door cameras/doorbell/lights etc but we already had those so I didn’t need them. Very handy for someone with disabilities and the less mobile. Hope your wife is making progress.

Just had an email from Scottish Power about my direct debit, I currently pay £100 per month as I am £2100 in credit ( I put £1750 in to my account back in July as I didn't want to pay over £300 per month)
Having reviewed my account and my usage my next bill will be £460 & I can reduce my direct debit to £36 per month , no point if the charges are increasing again in 2023 I'd rather stay in credit.

I seem to remember that Ofgem stopped the energy companies from taking excessive direct debit payments from their customers as they deemed them to be gaining interest on all the overpaid cash in their accounts. In these days of soaring bills and crap interest on savings i wonder if that's still the case? :-\

If I was £2100 in credit I'd be wanting some interest, not to pay more. :o

Just had my energy bill this morning for gas & electric £455 last year it was £275 so around 65 percent increase,to be honest I was expecting around the £600 mark .

Before the energy price hike the higher price above would have been annually for my parents, and they would still be in credit. ;D When we pulled in to their drive in the evening we would see one of them get out of their chair and turn up the thermostat and put a couple of lights on.
