Got an oil and filter change to do on a mate's mondeo diesel and had a look at it the other day noticed you need a 27mm shallow socket to get the top of the oil filter cover off, the oil filter is a paper filter insert, and is situated on the front of the block, slighty to the left of the downpipe as you look at the front of the car, could get a 1/2" socket on it but not with ratchet on it as well. I think it needs to be 3/4" drive as it's a bit of a tight fit for a 1/2" ratchet.
Not had a look at the fuel filter yet, watched a video on the tube about this and it seems the filter is under the back near the tank, and you have to manually bleed the feed to the pump once you've changed it (There's no primer apparently - who designed that :o). However looking at his it looks like there is some sort of filter container thing on drivers side just under the big plastic cover on the engine.
Anyone know for certain if the filter is indeed at the back or can it be in the engine bay in these as well depending on year/model etc?

On my 2008 2.2 TDCi the fuel filter is at the front o/s and as you say is a plastic container thingy. :y
I always fill the new filter with diesel before fitting and then it will start and self bleed. :)

That's what I was suspecting thanks, that it is up front rather than underneath.

The ones I worked on had the filter at the rear and are a complete bar steward to get going again, lots of brake cleaner sprayed down the intake till it self bleeds or you fabricate a pump to fit the pipe in the engine bay and prime it. Old Citreon/puget one works.

They are supposed to self prime.
Usually cycling the ignition a number of times without cranking, for 30 seconds each time, it is supposed to run the lift pump for a spell to circulate fuel around the low pressure circuits.

Turning the ignition and listening for the tank pump to prime would answer that.
Although having the high pressure pump also drag the fuel from the tank as well is a pretty tall order.

Like I said, the only way we found to prime them was to spray brake cleaner into the intake trunking carefully till it ran. Some work fairly quick and others can be a PIA. We asked the Ford main agents mechanics and they didnt change filters due to this(even though it is a service item) but we know how bad main agent services are.

Recall that Surrey Plod had one that took two batteries worth of cranking to start.
Cracking the lines was how it got done of the old BMC Commander and the Vetus 4.65 (Hyanddri) lump that replaced it on the boat as both had a separate mechanical lift pump.

Well it's never had an oil change and fuel filter change since he got it and that was FOUR years ago, and lord knows how long before that :y better get the scraper out for the rubberised oil in the sump!
