Title: Is your licence valid?
Post by: haj on 12 September 2008, 13:18:12
Just discovered mine expires next year (4B is the expiry date on front of licence)

A massive 300,000 photo card licences are due to expire in the next 12 months, yet a significant proportion of drivers are unaware that the new photo-style licences require updating every 10 years.

Unlike the superseded paper licence, which was valid 'for life', the new identity card versions feature a 'valid until' date, at which time motorists must shell out an extra £17.50 for a new card. It's thought that a lot of drivers are not aware of this requirement.

This summer marked the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the new photo card licence and of the cards due for update a massive 28% are still outstanding, according to the DVLA. These drivers could face a £1,000 fine if asked to surrender the licence.

Though the expiry date is printed on the front of the photo cards, it can only be identified as such when the owner turns the card over and reads the small print.

Making matters more confusing is the presence on the back of the cards of a date until which time the motorists is registered to hold the licence - their 70th birthday.

According to the DVLA, reminders will now be sent to drivers with photo cards due to expire, while the Association of British Insurers has confirmed that insurance cover is unaffected by an expired photo card.

Likewise -- but I guess if I change address at some point I will be forced to shell out for a photo one.

Your licence TO DRIVE is valid until 65, however the DOCUMENT that proves it is only valid for 10 years, this is to ensure your photograph could actually appear to be something like you ...

Actually .. IMHO  a con by HMG/DVLA to subtract money every 10 years .... £17.50 admin fee just to change a photograph in a computer file and print a new "card" ....

and BTW ... they don't even play by their own rules .. I had my licence renewed, at my cost, with a new photo when my HGV/PCV qualifications were added in 2007, but the expiry date stayed 2010 !!! - 10 years since the photo licence was issued.

rip off britain .. thank you Mister Brown

Is it no longer possible to get the paper licence renewed then?  Last time I moved they just changed the address and sent me a new paper one.  But, I suppose, that was about 10 years ago... :(

Paper licence will NOT be issued under any circumstances... :(

So .. change of address, removal of points, change of category etc etc.. all will ONLY be done by issuing a photo-licence ... at cost .. :(

Also, will they not issue one if you lose your paper licence?

What then about getting a producer or NIP where you have to produce both parts?

Good way of shafting the general public eh...

ive still got my paper one, have moved house a gazillion times since i got it, cant be bothered to send it back. its endorsed with all the speeding fines ive had so its a bit like a doodle pad to be honest. each time it gets sent away i get told 'you really should update this with your current details' and i dutifully say 'yes yes i will' knowing i have no intention of doing so. my license has a load of vehicles on it that would probably disappear if i sent it back for a newer one anyway. the only reason i can see for sending off for a new version would be if i required some additional photo id or something.

ha! anarchy!  ;D

I lost my motorbike licence when I went from paper to photo .. didn't realise for 5 years .. when I asked for it back the response .. "we only keep records for 3 years" so thats it .. according to DVLA I've never held a 'bike licence, and would need to start from scratch if I wanted one... :(

tossers.

I could think of a stronger word or phrase.  ::)  ::)
It's been said that it's a good idea to get your paper licence photo copied and the copy signed at the Post Office when  you send the paper licence of for a card type. Then if when they f*** up you have some evidence of what you had before.

sod that, the 'ive just moved house and i havent got round to it yet' routine does the trick. ive had to produce my license so many times over the years, endorsements, producers etc and its never been an issue.

So did I but I got it back as they still had the records.

I suppose you just have to plead useless DVLA if you get another bike
