Title: Blowing exhaust - MoT failure?
Post by: philhoward on 12 September 2008, 21:50:20
...if it's not due to corrosion?

Have just gone to re-tax wifey's Mini (the one with OOF registration) and the MoT has expired!!  It's done about 150 miles since the last one and is bodily sound, but I know the exhaust blows a bit from the manifold joint (like all Mini's do).  Is this a failure?

Off working abroad on Wednesday and she needs her car...so i need to MoT it quickly!

Not a failure on its own. ...

But, if an exhaust is insecure, or shows a visable hole it may fail.

It may also increae emissions, which in turn will fail it.

Doubt a manifold will cause either of the above.

not quite true
it all depends how bad the blow/leak is if the tester thinks its excessive it will fail if its only a minor leak it will pass.

It's secure enough and was brand new last year.

It's a pre-cat car (1990), so emmissions should be a doddle - since i fixed the carb!

You can feel it by hand and only really hear it when giving it some beans...

Cant you just replace the clamp or seal it well enough to get through the test?    If its not that bad i wouldn't worry about it but it does depend on the tester.

In which case it should be fine... They don't really give it the beans for an MOT test :y :y :y
