Title: Naughty Signum....she is doing it again.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 25 August 2024, 13:30:20
OK....so she changes up smoothly and quickly through the AF40 ZF6 before selecting top gear (6th)

Roundabout approaching so she drops down smoothly and silently through the gears to 3rd. Perfect.

Gathering speed again she refuses to change up, steadfastly remaining in 3rd gear.....even using the box manually she will not shift gear.

I know some mention an AFT change but the gearbox is otherwise so smooth I have my doubts that this is the problem especially as I recently found documentation that the ATF was replaced just before I bought her....around 40,000 miles ago.

Software problems?....something else perhaps.

Thing is, I don't want to spend a fortune trying this and that because despite being a 'future classic'  ::)  she is probably worth less than a large Mars bar and family sized bottle of coke. :)

Just part of a 'classic' meal deal then.  :) Jokes aside hope you sort it soon.

is it like the omega ,where you can just swap the gearbox ecu without any programming as such ?
or does the current one have any codes ?

No warning lights, and no codes using a Maxiscan MS509......although I'm not sure if this detects gearbox faults.

Engine gets very hot when stuck in 3rd gear. :-\

Sounds like a sticking shift solenoid or similar.
Always worth ATF and filter change as given the few miles you obviously cover the gearbox will thank you and may well be the fix given nothing else has changed.

i use the same scanner and it shows gearbox codes on the omega so should on yours ?
looking on ebay there are a few ecu's for around £30 if they can be plug and play ?
just a thought

If it were mine I'd definitely go for ATF & filter change as the first option, many folk on the RR site have experienced similar problems & it seems that in the majority of cases it does the trick.

Don't know anything of the Signum[other than they're ugly :-X]but I'm not so sure a gearbox filter change is possible without pulling the 'box and stripping it down? A change of ATF is of course doable with the 'box in place either by flushing it through in one go or as many think is the better option several "sump dumps" over several hundred or so miles.

I suspect after fees and the markdowns when they walk round it, you will get less than half scrap value.

I hope they will appreciate it as a future classic and pay me the full wedge. >:D

I hear 'Motorway' pay better money but I have no experience of them.

Of course as a future classic, WBAC will be so eager to get their sweaty paws on it that they won't be at all phased when you tell them about the dodgy gearbox!  ::)  :)

Motorway won't touch it with a shitty stick.  They are only really interested in newer, low mileage cars.

Yep, motorway is just a bunch of dealers bidding to buy your car, and they pay a commission to the introducer (Motorway). They tart them up, service them, possibly MOT them and put them on the forecourt.
The process is a PITA. You have to tell them everything about your car and take photos to upload. You get an outline to fit different parts of your car into and, if it's not an exact fit, the pics keep getting rejected. In the end I lost the will to live, and also the will to sell my astra.

Stop effing around and get the gearbox fluid changed. If that doesn't work, I doubt the car is worth throwing any more money at, unless you're so attached to it you'd pay to keep it running.

Just returned from an MOT pass. :y

A few advisories though.

Nail in nearside rear tyre.
Track rod ball end (offside) has slight play.
Offside front wheel bearing has slight play.
coil springs corroded (all four springs).
Brake pipes corroded, covered in grease and other materials.

Other than that she is still a spring chicken of a car. :-* :-*
