Left hand drive 2016 Pug 5008, Spanish registered. It has a pop up screen upon which it shows satnav etc.
The screen is linked to the head unit.
The head unit has power (and fuse is ok) but it’s constantly trying to eject a CD and the pop up screen remains blank.
Some say it’s a firmware issue. And needs reflashing. Some say it needs a new head unit.
Dealer in Spain has quoted her 3500€ and this seems extortionate. The local garages won’t touch it and say “main dealer only”.
Car belongs to some extremely close friends (who I basically consider family) so I really don’t want them to be ripped off.
I’m flying back out to Spain on 20th this month to try and fix it and I really want to be armed with as much knowledge and relevant kit as I can.
Thanks folks :y

As an aside the electronic handbrake switch has fallen apart so I considered if they could be linked. I can’t see how….. but it is French!!

Can you get a head unit from ebay or a breakers here for a reasonable price to take with you? :-\

£500 plus and can’t work out if it’s coded to the car or not. Also there appear to be loads of different models. Worried I may have to take the old one out to get a P/N :(
-
I would do a bsi reset before anything else, simple procedure which you can google
-
It's a Franco-Italian(with a side order of Chrysler :o ) mongrel with an electrical fault.
Kill it with fire ::)
-
It seems to me that the dealer has quoted such a ridiculous price because they really don't want to go anywhere near it. Surely an 8 year old pug can't be worth much more than €3500?
-
If it were me I would take a DIN adapter, aftermarket head unit and aftermarket HUD unit that connects to the OBD2.
Then take all the PUG items and follow Nick's advice.
-
€3,500 is alot for a software update, but equally it's probably on par with replacing all the related components.
On modern cars, the interface panel, screen and control units are all separate components.
Take a decent code reader as it could be related to other issues via various canbus lines.
Second hand parts will ideally be from a known working car, but without the ability to code parts to the new car, you may not fix anything. Notwithstanding that the used parts may well be junk.
That said it could be as simple as a broken connection.

Had a chat with a frog college who is ex PSA, apparently the symptoms point to a dead flash card internally (apparently they hammer the flash and it burns out.....bad design.....he recalls it being a micro SD).
His suggestion is to do a google as he seemed to think there are a few videos on YouTube giving info (its a pretty common head unit used across loads of the range including the DS's) as to how to get to the unit, change the part, and force a re-flash
He did also suggest torching it or run it a bit longer and it may well do that itself for you ;D
-
Just a single match will fix it.

Thanks v much Mark :y
Is the SD card replaceable or is it too late by then?
I notice some of the older models have an external SD slot but this one doesn’t
I’ve also seen a USB port in the centre console and have read it can be flashed from there?
I desperately don’t want to brick the car completely, she’d kill me ;D

Response from the 'cheese eating surrender monkey' is that it has an internal card so needs the unit removing to get at it, he thinks its around an 8GB part from memory. You should then be able to find a CD image online which you need to burn from a PC to a blank disc. Inserting the CD should recover the SW to the unit.
He says its been a while but, in the error state, the BIOS goes looking for the recovery image on the CD player and hence the noise you can here repeating. He recalls the unit being a Conti sourced part
He also added that his company one suffered an external combustion issue on the engine so there is hope of an insurance claim

Thank you so so much :y :y

This is looking up. I've read this great article online for how to access the motherboard and replace the internal SD:
https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=63227
Rather than download an ISO though (I've heard a lot of people have had issues with the updates not finishing when doing this) I have ordered the firmware CD from the genuine Peugeot Stealer for the very acceptable sum of just over £17. Parts chap was very helpful and will text me when it arrives.
Think we might be on for a cheap repair! :y

I have not long landed in sunny Spain and dragged my bag of bits off the baggage belt.
Radio removal pins
New class 10 microsd card (stipulated by pug forum)
Firmware CD from the dealer themselves rather than an image
Staying in a hotel in Torrevieja tonight because it’s late and I need a few beers, but will be at their villa for a couple of days after tonight, tinkering with le frog mobile
Will keep you posted (or shout with any worries ;D) :y

Hey all,
I'm sorry I didn't update this sooner.
So, I took the unit out. Single DIN affair, popped out like a piece of cake with the removal pins. Unclipped the connectors, and took it into the house.
A handful of small torx screws and I had the unit apart, I had to remove the face of the head unit for clearance but it was obviously simple to do. I could then get to the SD card. I removed the (suspected corrupt) 8gb card, and replaced it with a 64gb one. Took half an hour at most and that was being slow and careful and stopping to check photos online.
Back on with the cover, and unit back in car (refitting was as easy as removal - 1 minute job).
Inserted the Pug dealer firmware CD, and it all just jumped into life!!! The screen popped up, with an image the Peugeot Lion, and a message similar to "Installing software, don't press anything and keep engine running".
This took about an hour, but it got there, and upon completion, the whole infotainment system (and previously dead screen) was working again, as were the parking sensors, steering wheel controls, and whatever else stopped working when it went wrong.
Noticed it found satellites but had no maps installed, so I got the latest 2024 Western Europe maps for her, (from ebay!) which again installed very easily from a USB.
All is well that ends well. Dealer quoted her 3500 euros for this job from memory, and it cost me £55* for the SD card, removal pins, and software. So pleased to have saved her this money and I know it was very appreciated.
* I'm not including my cheap flights in that cost, because ultimately I had 4 days in the sun, in a lovely villa with great company 8)
Dealers should hang their heads in shame....

Also a massive thanks to our resident Mark and his cheese-eating Peugeot friend :D

Brilliant, James, she's a very lucky lady. :y
Apart from owning a Peugeot :)

Job well jobbed :y
-
Isn't that great a job completed at a fraction of the ridiculous dealers prices, and a few days in glorious Spain not forgetting the 🍺🍺🍺🍺

Good to hear, I will feed back to the Frenchy when he finishes his latest strike.
It really didn't need to be a class 10, 6 would be plenty, the processor in that unit can't write fast enough to the flash to warrant a fast part (and it shouldn't be writing much anyway.......although I suspect it uses it as a swap drive and that is what is wearing it out). The more important part is a having a much larger storage capacity to allow the wear levelling in the internal flash controller to have more blocks to play with.

Cars get scrapped for less these days so what a great outcome! 8) :y

I was gonna say that, but I didn't want to overload James with unnecessary information.

Strewth.....Gone are the days you could fill your pockets with anything that would fit and then some old bloke behind the counter would say....just give us a couple of quid mate.

Are you sure you're not far older than you claim? :)

I guess the dealer would have just replaced the whole unit, rather than the card, hence the stupid quote.
Nice work :)
