Title: Outcome of Trump car tariffs?
Post by: Varche on 28 March 2025, 22:27:53
Is it likely that we are heading for a surplus of German , in particular cars, as a result of Trump tariffs? And a knock on of lower secondhand car prices here in Europe?

What do you think?

I thought most of the European car companies have plants in Mexico where they supply the USA from?  ???

True.

So if Trump tariffs cause a reduction in “ European” cars bought by US customers that will be felt in Mexico and not in Europe?

It will only affect vehicles produced out side of the US. Much of the North American stuff from the likes of VW come from South America or China. Including alot of US brands... Buick and Lincoln to name but two are predominantly Chinese built.

It may also help to kill off Nissan as their compact cars are built in the UK.

In Mexico they'll probably park them up in the desert and hope for a return of the Democrats in 2028.

Either that they could shut down their European factories and ship the cars across the Atlantic.

If they meet EU legislation.

Fair point, but going forward they could use those redundant Mexican factories to produce cars for Europe, and the EU has a FTA with Mexico.

I think Lord Opti's BMW was made in Mexico?  So it already happens, but if the Mexicans have spare capacity.....   ;)
