Title: Speedo and rev counter not working.
Post by: Webby the Bear on 17 September 2025, 20:48:30
Good evening chaps, hope you’re all well.

As above, speedo and rev counter not working and both needles “quivering” 😱
Temp gauge and fuel level work fine.
No ABS or TC light on.

I’m guessing this is an issue with the instrument cluster. I used to send any cluster away to Ecu testing or BBA but I’m informed they apparently can’t do anything with it.

Apologies if I’ve raised this issue before but it started working again but now it’s permanently inoperative. Is the general consensus to replace the cluster or is there any obvious repair that I can do?

TIA boys 🥰

Every time I've seen it with the little needle shimmer, its needed a replacement cluster.

it depends on how you are with a soldering iron .and wether you are able /confident in removing the internal circuit board from it .on the last 3 ive seen its always been an issue with the actual board rather than any components on it .the board is double sided and the interconnections can swell and go bad due to age and the heat that the cluster gets subject to.
a replacement cluster assembly (if in good order )will sort it but you are limited to finding one with the correct mileage on it (if it bothers you )or swapping the pcb from it to yours .

Thanks for reply mate.
Yeah I’m happy to rip it apart 🤣
Once clusters off where do I go from there?

Ok thanks TB. I’ll look out for one. I take it there’s no way of adjusting the mileage to correct on a replacement unit? I doubt they’d making it that simple 🤣

Well its worth doing cam-in-head's option, nothing to lose :y

As for mileage, find a dodgy car dealer ;D

As for mileage, find a dodgy car dealer ;D

Im almost certain that it was on my first Omega that I removed the complete odometer roller and set the mileage digits level. Once removed, you can roll the digits to your choice, so you could match the original mileage.
On my first Omega, one of the digits was out of line so I took the whole thing apart and sorted it. I do remember it being really fiddly but if you remove the clip on the end of the roller and remove the roller, little spring (fingers) stop the digits from rolling. If you rotate the fingers bar away from the numbers you can freely roll the numbers to your own choice. Once you've reset the numbers to match the true mileage, you align the odometer roller back in to the dial and relocate the fingers in to their fitting place. That's the only fiddly bit really. Once returned to its dial, check that the digits are all in line and then pop the end clip back on.  :y  Worth trying if you obtain a spare one.

Ah, somebody else has done it as well, so I’m not the only one to fiddle with the numbers.  ;D

is there a way of adjusting the mileage on the new cluster

I've done it.It's a bit fiddly but you essentially remove the speedo from the cluster and then taking a note of how it sits and which bit matches the viewing slot in the speedo face push the centre pin out that the digits rotate on so you can realign the digit barrels to the mileage you want then reassemble.

if you get a working cluster you can adjust the mileage to be correct as mentioned or fit its pcb to  your cluster .
if you get a cluster it needs to match the car in respect to getting the speedo reading correct or if you get the pcb out and look at it you should see the faulty joints .(if not send me it and il do it )

Thanks everyone for input, really appreciated it.

I’ll rip in to it and see what’s what.

Thanks men 🥰🥰🥰

The cluster on my Omega behaves in the same way so I'll follow the advice given above and attempt a repair

its a common fault as they age and you will be suprised just how hot they get behind the dash, wether that is the cause or just down to the age and current flow who knows. all i know is the last 3 i did all had the same fault and were cured by adding small linking wires on the pcb to bypass the bad "eyelets" cant hurt to try as you say. just look carefully and you should see some blackened obvious bad joints. dont try to solder the joints as such, just add bypass wires. if it doesnt cure it then you would have been replacing the unit anyway .

Thanks CIH.

I’ll remove the unit and see what I can do. U may be getting a PM from me soon 🤣

Thanks mate, really appreciate ur help 😃😃😃

it should be obvious if any of the eyelets are bad but yes get it apart first and the pcb out .the cluster is screwed yogether and the pcb held in by a long silver clip !.
