Title: Importing some parts from Spain. Question.
Post by: Doctor Gollum on 01 October 2025, 14:08:35
Confused.com ::)

So, found a pair of used door cards for TPC at a breakers in Spain.

Seller has agreed to sell them to me if I arrange shipping.

That's fine, and have found a courier company who will collect and ship them for a reasonable price. However seller is asking for me to complete the customs paperwork.

Would a CN23 suffice? Obviously I am not a business and the parts are for my personal use so getting an EORI form that they're asking for seems excessive. :-\

It looks to be a generic commercial invoice, which is pretty much all that is needed, HS tariff codes can be interesting to find, but just say if you need help with that as its something I am always having to find (they define the import duty you have to pay on the item).

You can only have an EORI if you are a registered legal entity.

Watch out for the incoterms as well

Just checked, tariff code 8708291000 or 8708299000 is probably suitable, that looks to be a 0% tariff so only liable for VAT (if they bother)

Thanks Mark :y

The second one looks to be the closest. Couldn't make head nor tail of the listings without a starting point.

The invoice from the company is zero rated, so expecting to have to pay 20%. That said, it's €132, so 20% isn't exactly alot.

The trick is to make the invoice 'real' so try to break it down so say '4 x €33 - Merc Interior Door trim' so if they check it they see four items and a listing for four items on the invoice (otherwise things get held up!).

Your courier will then either deliver it, or give you details of how to pay the duty/VAT (zero duty in this case) plus a clearance charge.

If you consult the courier, they sometimes will create the commercial invoice for you so the records they hold and the shipped details match.

Yeh, the Tariff codes really don't get updated often enough so its not an exact science, in this case they look to still be engine cc related (which is mad for a bit of trim!).

You want to try shipping whole or large portions of a car and sub-assemblies (which we do a lot), its a nightmare!

Using UPS, and have had to answer various questions and provide information that's required for the paperwork. Calculated duty is €27, which is pretty much as expected.

Had to provide my NI number as my formal ID as well as providing the registration number for the company selling the parts.

Ah if only you had a Digital Starmer Card everything would be so much easier!  ;D

I very nearly posted the same but thought it may be perceived that I agreed with the Starmer card, and I wouldn’t want that.  ;D

I suspect that I am over thinking this...

Basically I have purchased two things for my personal and non commercial use from a seller in Spain. They have zero rated the item because it's going overseas and is therefore exempt from Spanish VAT.

I am arranging the shipping of my item, using UPS as the agency for that shipment. In turn this is being delivered to my home address because it's my only address.

So in summary, my personal (ie non commercial) property is being collected from a Spanish address on my behalf to be delivered to me at my home.

As I understand it that makes me both the shipper and the receiver. The seller of the item is merely the collection address...

Or have I missed something? :-\

Obviously VAT will become due when it arrives in the UK. And I have no issues with this.

No that is correct, and hence why you only need a commercial invoice (with the details described already) and an appointed courier.

Ta :y

I popped into UPS in Feltham on my way to work and had a chat with them and they confirmed all of that.

Booked the collection and it generated the commercial invoice along with the shipping label. So all printed off and signed and just need to get them emailed over.

For the Declared Statement, I have written the following:

"I, me, declare.that these items have been purchased by myself as a private individual for my own personal  use and have no commercial value or purpose."

Think that covers it...
