Any good?
Bro is looking at one as a potential purchase... Apparently it's a TD4 180 manual. Reviews suggest that the 180 was auto only?
He's looked at a CX5 as well, but not sure what the alternatives are.
My instinct would be to run away from both but for different reasons. :-\

A mate of mine has a 19 plate CX-5 and it's reasonably refined, much moreso than a freelander disco sport, and he's had very little trouble with it.

Depending on age, it will either be Ford engine or Jaguar Ingenium. The Ford one is a little, err, agricultural, but generally very reliable. The Ingenium diesel is very refined but has a couple of very well known issues, particularly around chains, allegedly less reliable than a K series HG. That said, her car is Ingenium diesel, over 150k miles, original chains, and properly reliable aside from an occasional limp mode where I can't work out what is going on (P006A MAP/MAF correlation)
Rest of the car will depend on its previous life (as will the engine in reality), both service and usage - being a pretty capable 4x4, it might have spend its life towing horseboxes out of muddy fields, or reversing speedboats into the sea. Or it might have just taken the kids to school.
As a car, most Disco sports seem nice to ride in and drive, better than the Freelander II, which itself is miles better than the original Freelander...

In part, if I wanted that sort of car, I'd never be happy until I'd scratched that full fat Range Rover itch....

Personally I wouldn't have one of the later 2.0 diesels, based purely off personal experience of a disco 5 that I owned for about a week before it went back to the dealer due to one of the well known issues that TB mentioned (cracked inlet manifold iirc). Also one of the dad's at my son's school had one that gave nothing but trouble. I suspect that was down to issues from improper diesel use but nevertheless, he seemed to always be chasing something, Turbo actuator / MAF, all manner of things were mooted and tested but he never got to the bottom of it. In the two years we were acquaintances it seemed to give him nothing but trouble - ultimately he traded it in rather than fire a big parts cannon at it :(.
SWMBO's 2.2 Evoque seemed pretty reliable in the time she had it, a perished hose and some odd electrical gremlins caused by the need for a new aux battery were about the extent of its offences. :y

50/50 is a bit of a dice roll from a reliability perspective. :-\

For a smidge more money, a similar mileage slightly older ML250 can be had with similar off road ability and a decent towing capacity... Which would obviously be my suggestion. Don't recall Andy B having too many issues with his one :-\

That would be Ingenium diesel, and per around 2019/2020, the older chains, which are the single most common issue with that engine - not helped by the stupid stated service interval of something like 20k, which is ridiculous for a diesel, and especially a chain driven one.
For anyone else looking, check for chain rattle at start up, if it has any, walk away - popping on the newer chains will need around £2k. Chains aside, I thing most people think the 2l Ingenium diesel is a brilliant engine, and is powerful, refined, and spectacularly economical.
