Title: Premium Fuels are  they worth it?
Post by: Alex W on 19 September 2008, 10:41:02
What is the benefit, if any, in paying the extra for the "Advanced"or "Ultimate" fuels? Are they worth it?

I find they do give a little extra economy OR performance....

but not really worth the extra.

Tend to give each a dose for cleaning purposes when I fill up immediately after using forte cleaner.

The higher octane rating will slightly improve economy and performance...  ...whether its cost effective is another matter.  The extra detergent agents should save on injector cleaners etc

i just tried 2 tankfulls of BP Ultimate, its a noticeable improvement.

I found:

Smoother Idle
More power at the higher rev ranges, pulls harder from about 4.5k RPM onwards
1-3 mpg improvement.

Switched back to normal BP for now, but it only costs about £2/3 extra for a tank of the good stuff, i might go back to it  :)

So it's probably worth treating it to a tankful now and then for cleaning purposes?

Slight performance increase but the slight economy vaporizes with the higher price..However if they really add some cleaners this is plus..

I tend to occasionally use BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power once in a while in the MV6.

No significant difference...no point in the extra expense. :-*

I haven't found the very slight increase in mpg and performance justifies the extra expense so only use a tankful once every couple of months.

If you've got a high performance turbo car they make a massive difference, and as some mk3 golf (small non turbo engines I might add!) owners found out to their cost vital to make the car run right. But in anything else you'll be pushed to tell the difference.

i have never used premium fuel but have added acetone when i fill up the tank (this was on my vectra yet to try on the mig)

only benefitted when i filled the tank and on long journeys. better performance for a fraction of the petrol cost

i did notice a discernible difference in performance with my V6 Galant - not huge - but noticeable - also - maybe i was justifying the extra cost a bit in my head it did seem more economical - didnt do any scientific tests on this tho

ps - my wife could tell whether or not i'd put the good stuff in - said the car was "peppier"
mainly used shell v-power

i'd like to try the Tesco99 stuff but its about £2.50 a litre!!

Only ever had one car where there was a big difference in performance and the car ran better, that was a 1.9 Peugot 205 Gti
