Title: Transferring a Registration Number ...
Post by: johndm1957 on 07 September 2008, 10:29:21
I want to transfer my personal registration number from my old Pontiac onto my Omega.

The Pontiac is now SORN and MOT expired since October 2007.

I'm reading on the DVLA site that they might want to inspect the donor vehicle to confirm its identity, and its my responsability to get it to the inspection, in this case that would mean getting it transported, which would be rather expensive!

How often do they actually call vehicles for inspection?

If i've got to spend an extra couple of hundred quid transporting it around the country, guess I'll forget it, and sell/scrap the Pontiac leaving the plate on it.

As far as i know the both cars have to be road legal.

DVLA can make exceptions, I had a private plate taken of a motor that had been wrote off - but I had to trailer it to a VOSA yard for a ID check

I think you may find they will only consider it if the tax and mot ran out within 6 months.
You may have to get it moted and taxed again.
Unless the rules have changed again.
If the plate was transfered to the Pontiac within say the last 10 years they may not need to see the car.

As others have stated the cars involved must be taxed and MOT'd, but for full information go to:

All the best! :y

Got my reply from the Local Licencing Office today.......

Despite MOT expiry in September 2007,
Despite SORN since October 2007,

Success!

Pontiac got back its original number that it had when I bought it in 1988. Thats an A prefix as it was built in 1984....bugger, 20 years of a V8 rumble!

I did it on retention just in case there were any problems, so its going on my Omega shortly.. ;D

Changed a number across a year or so ago...

As long as the car was declared Sorn on or before the 1st day it was due...you have up to 12 months to transfer it...so you just made it...

If there had been a gap between Tax expiring and SORN start then you would have been stuffed...

They generally only check a very few cars...but almost certainly will if either car is over 10 or 12 years (cant remember which)...they sent someone out to check my Cav, was all very easy...

I have never been checked out, just go to the local dvla office and fill in the forms. easy peasy  :)

No.  A replacement MOT cert with the new reg number will be issued as will a new tax disc.

If you purchase the plate from DVLA then there will be paperwork of some description to complete, be that on line, by post or at your local vehicle licencing office (LVLO).  Remember the V5 (log sheet) will require changing as well, its all done at the same time.
