Title: rather Fartis
Post by: Martin_1962 on 20 September 2008, 14:04:05
Category C >:( >:( >:( >:(

I phoned them up and said the damamge was minor and I was getting repaired for less than the excess, had a letter this morning saying category C

1) WHat does this mean?

2) Can someone check the database?

I might be wrong but I think you can get a second opinion.......

Category A: Total burnout. No value left in the vehicle
Category B: Break only. Value lies in salvage
Category C: Damage to car is more than total value of car
Category D: Repair would cost almost as much as the vehicle is worth. Better to write off than repair. No comebacks for the insurers

It only came off the road to be pulled straight and repanelled, and the repairs were only £25 more than my excess!

I'm sorry to say Martin but I think that may have been a mistake as you didn't have to unofficially (officially you do about any accident) and those sods can take advantage as they have! :'( :'(

yep, get a second opinion, cos a Cat C needs a VIC check before it can go back on the road :(

What do you mean back - it never came off!

I have driven it everyday since the bump and it was off road for 26 hours (overnight while it was repaired)

i know, they must class it as "off the road" then in a cat c situation

you'll need to grille your insurance company i think, find out how they come to the conclusion of cat C

i dont know how they can even categorise it since you havent actually claimed

Did they ever send an assessor around?  If not tell them it polished out and show them the car as it is now -- no real damage, therefore no cat C

another thought actually... how can they categorise it without paying out on it??

are you sure it wasnt just an opinionative letter??

I suspected so looking at the photos of the damage, what does the company do with its records? If the Cat C is made official then you are in trouble.

What exactly did you say to the insurance company?

in a future resale scenario, half the value if your lucky,im afraid. if they insist on cat c write off, offer to buy it back.
I believe cat c must appear on the log book.Best to try to talk insurance company out of being involved. :y

although he's told them about it, i'm certain he hasn't claimed, being as he said he repaired at a cost slightly above his excess value, if he hasnt claimed, they havent paid out, so they dont own the car, and they shouldnt be able to categorize it, hence his call this coming monday

I said that I am not proceeding with the claim as my excess is too high and my insurance would be too high and even if it cost £1000 it would still be cheaper to not claim, also I have bought the parts and had someone to fit them

The damaged vehicle has been categorised as C by the inspecting Engineer and we would ask you to read through the enclosed information regarding the government'c Vehicle Identity Check Scheme which was introduced on the 7th April 2003 in respect of category A, B and C salvage.
