Title: have i bought the wrong omega?
Post by: feeutfo on 21 September 2008, 01:04:51
a couple of weeks before i bought my current car i sore a VERY nice 3.2 elite at Dk motors in thatchem, £5500 iirc 50k miles spotless in every way with a detachable tow bar. It was mint, silver with black leather no rust underneath, obviously garaged over night on an03 plate but it may have been an 02.
But i left it, they would only give me 400 for mine and by the time i had had fitted lpg i was looking at a 7k motor.

I then saw the one i bought, 70k on a 52 plate on for £3900. I gave him mine and 3500. I was pleased at the time as it had a colour screen. But was a bit worried about the condition of the underside. The exhaust was rusty and failed a week ago, as did the rear air dampers, £500 right there. Plus the service that other car did not need, atf change on a ramp £85, air con service £70, engine service, and i have still to do the belts and lpg.

But whats really bothering me is the car body condition, there are several little(5mill dia) patches of rust coming through the paint and the rear arches where the rear door closes shocked me when i got it home. I am beginning to wonder if i would have been better off with the more expensive car, koz if much more goes wrong with this one i will be knocking on the door of the more expensive price range.
So, question is, as above, have i bought the wrong car?

I really can't comment on your circumstances, but once I'd owned mine for a while I knew I had a lot on my hands.

Since buying it (as a runner) I've had to do:

HBV
Gearbox change + ATF
Exhaust system
Wiring fault
Wiper motor (still not done)
Battery
Thermostat
Cambelt kit etc
Full service + spark plugs
Oil cooler re-seal
Coolant bridge re seal
New tyres all round
WIM geometry setup (was eating rubber)

And a lot more I can't currently think of

So - in a nutshell, if you have a goodun, and there is no feasable reason to change it - you can well be better with the devil you know :y

Although that said, I got a 2000 W Facelift Elite Estate, black leather, and generally mint (alloys aside) for £1300 - with colour screen satnav, Bose, and the works - so I still mustn't grumble, especially now it's somewhere near sorted  ::)

in my opinion the other one was way overpriced at £5500 anyway

£5500 for any Omega is overpriced in my opinion. So I think that you probably made the wise choice.
A private sale will give you much better value for your money however. :-* :-* :-*

I think that about £3000 should buy a mint 53 plate elite with FVSH if bought privately.
I would expect these prices to drop significantly when the new tax laws come into effect.
I will be ready to seize this opportunity. :y :y

5500£ for a well looked and all items changed(this is serious amount of sum more than the car value)  2002,2003 Omega is cheap even in UK standards..

As an example, mine initally cost 7500 £ (here in Turkey) 3.5 years ago and total repairs and change items (all sensors, complete exhaust, wheel bearings, shocks, rear bushes, wishbones, droop links, new discs, new headlights,Xenon, exhaust manifold gasket, complete paint, new alloys and wheels etc etc ) nearly 7500-8000 £... Totalling more than 15000 £ :o :(

SO need to stay very long ;D

within the last 6 months of buying my 51 CDX i have replaced the engine, all of the fluids, 4 tyres, brakes all round, diff oil seal, air con regas and fit the LPG kit.

Mine has a few 'scabs' on it that need taking care of.
have you bought the wrong one, only you can say, but i would say the other one is overpriced
