I never usually agree with paying tolls in addition to my road tax if I do not need to do so. However, for the first time I used the Midland Express Way, M6 Toll, whilst travelling North and then back down South and must admit I thought it fantastic! :y :y :y
Even though I paid £4-50 each way, it was so good avoiding that blessed junction at Birmingham with the M5 and M6, instead zooming along a basically clear motorway as oppossed to the queues on the old M6 where I have wasted weeks worth of time during my years of business mileage between Bristol and the North! :( :(
A great improvement 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
The question must be though why do we have to pay these tolls (and for the Dartford Crossing on my journey) when we pay road tax, VAT on fuel along with high taxes on the juice?! :'( :'( >:( >:(
-
Privately funded roads - rather than using our tax money >:(
-
the motor vehicle became a method of
lining MPs pockets paying for everything else including the spongers and all the failed projects which should never had gotten off the ground....
hence why VED and the income from fuel tax go intot he main pot and only about 10-20% gets put back into the roads >:(
-
I think that the government wants it both ways.
Toll charges and no road tax maybe considersed to be O.K.
Road tax and no charges may be acceptable.
Road tax and toll charges..........................no way!!!!!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Whatever the rights and wrongs, M6 toll is worth the £4.50 any day in my book...

My sentiments exactly >:( ...... I did once use it though >:( cos I ended up in the wrong lane of the M6 :-[

and how much does it have to go to before it's 'too expensive' & you'd queue up with the rest of us on the M6? If it's £4-50, has it aready gone up since it was opened? :-/

In this instance this was very true TB as I averaged an mpg of about 31 through this M6 Toll section covered in rapid time, whereas going on the old route I would have stopped and started many times, averaging just 17 mpg if lucky at £1.13 a litre! ::) ::) ::) ::)

I use it all the time best thing they built in my opinion saved me hours in the past.l

As said, I didn't want to get into a debate about rights and wrongs - the milk of human kindness is not flowing too well today, and I'd probably get in another argument ::)
I think its worth the £4.50 (was £3 when opened, but only for first 2m cars or something like that). Whether or not we should have to pay is a debate I'll join another day...

i found its a very fast piece of road too, as long as they stay smart and keep the camera cash machines away people will always use it.
Its great bit of road to get your foot down. 8-)

Used it a few times for shake down testing.
First class bit of road, but i fear they are getting gready with pricing at peak time

That was the other great think I loved about this road!! :D :y :y

Be aware, its still classed as public road, with a legally enforcable 70mph speed limit, and its not unusual for a camera van to be parked up, esp on that section where an A road runs parallel...
-
Should be speed limit free like the motorways before 1965 (I think).then it would be great fun.
many motoring magazines used to speed test their cars on the M1 in the early sixties....legally. :y :y

Oh dear.......but a few went past me going faster at the time! :D ;)
Will be watching my letter box (yet again) though for my first speeding ticket! ;D ;)

Agreed; it is an Express Way after all and we are paying extra for it ;) ;)

I think I would cough up to use it if they made it a "no speed limit"road. then again,so would everyone else so it would get dangerous.
RE; the Dartford tunnel, the charge was originally to cover build costs etc and was due expire a few years back.It was then extended to build up a fund for maintenance.this period expired araound 3 years ago (iirc) and the government decided to keep the charge as an anti pollution tax due to very high localised pollution. The only reason for the local pollution is the fact that all the cars/trucks have to stop or slow down to pay the toll. >:( >:( >:(.......motorcycles are exempt though. :)

I've used it a couple of times, and not bothered a couple of times. I think if you're not travelling at peak times it makes little difference, so not worth £4.50. It's nice that they've priced all the HGVs off it though.
.. and I'm very careful of my speed along there. You can nearly always spot a Police presence somewhere along there.

Spend half my life going through it up to 6 times a day @ £2.90 each way gets a bit expensive after a week going in and out of Tilbury docks, you get a little discount if you have a tag, worse thing about it its run by the french now who pay the goverment a fee to run it >:( >:( >:(

It is quite literally highway robbery. >:( >:(

I find that it's well worth using during the day but late at night I still use the old road! :y :y
